Five Dwarf Fighters Walk Into A Cave... A Playtest Report

If they'd just thought to bring a burglar... Sounds like a good time, nice to see that given relatively even odds (no casters on either side) a group can simulate a wartime scenario (Dwarf infantry sneaking into the Orc lair to do what they do best...make little orc pieces). If you choose...

Yet another houserule for overnight healing

I think this sounds like a great alternative to the "full healing on long rest" playtest rule. I would be happy to use this as a player (as it's better than gaining a single HP) but not so jarring as complete healing. Enviornmental factors should affect the number of HD used (if any) though...

D&D 5E What do you want to see as the 5e Iconics?

It's Clyde Caldwell and that is the cover from the module Needle.

D&D 5E Do you play with "casual" gamers, and how should D&D Next accomodate their needs?

Falining that I'd like to see a Beginners Box type of product released alongside the core books. It's an easier price point and it will give the potential casual player a less intimidating way to get started if they don't have a group available.

D&DN Survey - Click Once and Complete

Got mine finished finally. Glad to see that they aren't wasting time getting these out to us. Gives me hope for seeing this game in sooner. Maybe they'll start pusing out the other updates to this sooner rather than later?

    Playtest report

Looks like a great time, I can't wait to see what they come up with next!

    Playtest Report: Player's Perspective (long)

Great report. Apparently XP is turned off again. As mentioned above, the Kobold lair has the least amount of treasure in the whole ravine. Granted, they're Kobolds and the bigger monsters only let them take what they don't feel like carrying. The slayer being able to auto kill during the...

    Playtesters: Are you using miniatures?

So far with minis and a battlemat for placement purposes (i.e. where's the rogue in relation to the taller characters). I was planning on some work without the minis and mat (just a rough sketch of the room) tonight but got sidetracked by the Hatfields and McCoys (damn you History channel...

    Quick Playtest Report

One way to avoid die rollling madness has been mentioned already: Advantage = reroll misses. Disadvantage = reroll hits. My own limited testing has also shown that combat is pretty "swingy". I'm torn between liking it at lower levels (you never know what's going to happen the next round) to...

    Wisdom too powerful?

For a save vs wifely wrath both can be applied interchangeably. The same goes for a number of checks that you'd like to attempt with your character depending on how you describe them. i.e. The high int wizard has studied goblins and is familiar with several ways that have been documented that...

OSR Runing new OSR adventures with the 5e playtest?

Waiting to see some higher level options for the playtest but I'm interested in playtesting A1 (tournament version most likely to keep it limited) Slave Pits of the Undercity. Already jumped on the Kickstarter for Rappan Athuk and now I'm wondering if I want the Sword and Wizardry version or...

    The "Smell Test"

1/2E for the most part and so far it smells just fine. Some of the newer mechanics are holding up well so far with play and I'm interested in seeing just how modular it will be in the end.

Hobgoblins Ain't Got Nothin': A REALLY LONG Playtest Report

Limited visibility due to lighting conditions can be solved by casting light on a small light object (sling stone, coin, etc) and giving it a good toss (bright light for 20' radius and dimming from there). Downside is letting everyone down the hall know you're coming but at least you'll see...

    Minigiant's Robo-Warriors

Planning on doing something similar tonight after work. Nice touch with the randomized use of limited resources, I hadn't thought of doing that. Given the lack of other input (aka waiting for someone else to make a decision) how long were the combats (5-10-15 minutes)?

    First Impressions?

++ Advantage/Disadvantage - Easier than looking up a chart of possible modifiers. Disadvantage will make someone cry if they lose a potential roll of 20 when their second die reads 3, lol. Potential to use a dead Goblin as a weapon...who doesn't love that visual? No mention of tindertwigs...

So the playtest packages coming online tonight at midnight or tomorrow?

Got the email. Requires that you do some button pushing and then a confirmation page saying that you will receive another emailw ith download instructions in 30-60 minutes. Looks like they figured out how to not crush their servers with this download...

    Something to remember tomorrow

Remembering how much mileage we generated from the Moldvay Basic set, I think we could get quite a few sessions out of pregens and the Caves of Chaos. I recently flipped through the Basic set and realized how much of KotB was DM instructions on how to run a campaign. Looking forward to giving...

    Magic Item Talk

I like the idea of a recipe (scroll/tome/etc) detailing the production of an item being an alternative to actually getting the item. It provides a plausible reason for the PCs gaining the knowledge along with a hook to point them in the right direction. Value set at a percentage of the actual...

    D&D 5E Where is D&D Headed Next (Wired.com)

Schemes definitely sound like something I can get behind for the Rogues! It's nice to see that they aren't expecting cookie cutter characters (Wizard who is an explorer, Fighter who is a thief). Is it Thursday yet?

    playtesting feel

Remembering the best parts of something isn't limited to games (girlfriends, jobs, neighborhoods, etc). The feeling you get when you first experience something is hard to recapture (but we spend a lot of money and time trying to do so). The older you get, the more likely you are to indulge...
