Does the spell failure chance from armor apply to using scrolls?

I do not agree with this at all. Preparation requires studying a spell book... I see no mention nor implication that this studying involves any somatic (or other) components. I would also like to point out that sorcerers cast spells with somatic components with no preparation required, which...

Does the spell failure chance from armor apply to using scrolls?

Wheeee! Here we go again! (I'm surprised, Hypersmurf... I usually agree with your posts.) 1. Like casting a spell. "...basically like" is NOT "identical to". It isn't even "identical to except for these differences...". Not worded strongly enough to trump the magic-item-activation rules...

    Slippers of Spiderclimb Question?

RE: Movement while wearing the slippers... From the SRD... It's pretty obvious that this means her climb speed is 15 feet. You can't take the "when worn" part of the sentence without the "movement on vertical surfaces" part. When you're not climbing, you get your land speed back. RE...

Stupid question: Wild shape + alter self stack?

Nice try! The Poly spells change the target into an average example of another creature. You can choose things like hair color, eye color, etc. You don't get to add random appendages, though. -AK

Does the spell failure chance from armor apply to using scrolls?

Funny... my recollection from my readings on this board is that Skip's ruling on this matter is generally considered to be correct. The rules are pretty clear... arcane failure penalty applies to casting spells. Activating a scroll is NOT the same thing as casting a spell. Skip's got it...

    Slippers of Spiderclimb Question?

Yes, double-move is allowed. 1. No time limit. 2. I think you're correct, these are all move-equivalent actions, subject to modifications. (E.g., retrieve from Haversack is free action, dropping removed boots (instead of storing) is free action, etc.) 3. Using the slippers magical abilities...

    Heighten Spell and metamagic?

Alternatively, you could Empower the spell, requiring a 5th-level spell slot, with the save of a 3rd level spell (since metamagic, with few exceptions, has no effect on the save DC). Then you can heighten it to a 7th-level spell spell-DC that'll take a 9th-level slot to cast. It's...

    healing HP's by resting

A matter of perspective. I consider two characters at full hit points to be EQUALLY UNINJURED. [B] Alternatively, if 8 damage represents a broken rib, a wizard at 20/20 HP is at risk of being incapacitated by a few broken ribs. A barbarian at 40/40 is tough enough to shrug off several broken...

    healing HP's by resting

A non-issue, IMHO. The same amount of damage heals in the same number of days, for equivalent levels, regardless of class. A wizard just doesn't have the ability to survive the number or severity of wounds that a fighter could. Since the wizard that's at death's door suffered much less trauma...

    Silly combinations

Intelligent bracers of sure striking? How about we add Intelligence to the mix. (Yeah, I know, that's stretching it.) Make it chaotic evil with a high ego score... Has anyone else seen The Evil Dead II? -AK

(Hopefully) easy question re: Sneak Attack

Keep in mind that hiding after combat has started is not very easy. "If people are observing the character, even casually, the character can't hide." [SRD] If the rogue can get out of line-of-sight, or make a successful bluff check to distract the opponent(s) ("Look! A purple worm!"), he or...

    Off-hand parry (S&F, MotW)

If I understand it correctly, Off-Hand Parry will let you put a buckler on that arm and a dagger of defending in the off-hand, and get the AC bonuses from the feat, buckler, and dagger! Of course, the penalties are giving up the off-hand attack(s) and taking a -2 to primary-hand attacks. Am I...

You ever have multiple wands you want to use in combat?

That limit is for using the quicken feat to cast a spell. The user of the wand doesn't have to have the feat, and isn't casting a spell (he's activating a magic item), so an argument could be made that the once-per-round restriction doesn't apply. I still don't like the Quickened Wand concept...

You ever have multiple wands you want to use in combat?

So is there anything (besides the wisdom of the DM) to prevent a rogue from using such a wand repeatedly during the surprise round, adding up some serious sneak attack damage? Don't like it. -AK

    Duelist PrC Questions

Is this identical with the Duelist described in Sword and Fist? I've been treating precise strike just like sneak attack with my duelist. Looks like I might have been understating the damage on occasion. -AK

    Cast from Scroll

If that 3rd level caster had chosen the healing domain, I think he could create the scroll as a 4th level caster, (1d8+4), since he is able to cast such spells at 1 plus his caster level. (The scroll would be priced for caster level 4, of course.) Anyone care to offer a correction? -AK...
