    D&D 5E Let's Talk About Yawning Portal

We all know the CR rules are borked above 6th level, so rather than change the Tomb of Horrors, merely have the party go in at lower level. 4 levels lower and the place will chew the witless up just fine.

D&D 5E Is It me, or has TFYP Missed Tomb Of Horror's Best Trap?

I have run this dungeon in every edition of the game but 4th, and can say with some familiarity that there is no indication that the staff was broken inside the field, and in any case, as an instantaneous effect, would have 'gone off' uselessly, as only ongoing magical effects are supressed by...

D&D 5E do you still roll for damage?

I always roll damage, and in nearly four decades of running games, I have never thought it slowed a game down, or had anyone else comment that they thought so. I find the whole average damage thing rather pointless as a result.

    D&D 5E I hate rapiers. Do you?

No - it is WoTC who are in fact confusing the rapier as a finesse weapon that isn't light - they are light - ESPECIALLY compared to the other non-light options for one handed weapon.

    D&D 5E I hate rapiers. Do you?

Rapiers do far too much damage. I have fought with them in re-enactment and the idea they hurt as much as a 'longsword' (really a very late period longsword from the English school) is hilariously far out. Scimitars are also heavier hitters than rapiers, and should not really be d6, the dice...

D&D 5E Let us stat up Conan the *insert sub-title here*

He frequently outfights his opponents, and when facing skilled ones, is able to defend against any and all techniques and tactics. He is, as you point out, an inspiration to his troops/pirates/companions as well. All of this says Battlemaster to me. His toughness and hitting like a train is...

D&D 5E Where does optimizing end and min-maxing begin? And is min-maxing a bad thing?

Nothing wrong with optimising a character from a gameworld or character concept point of view. Nothing wrong with proposing a name for a phenomenon - such as the term Stormwind Fallacy. There is plenty wrong with accepting that a proposed name for a phenomenon is an excuse not to analyse an...

D&D 5E Where does optimizing end and min-maxing begin? And is min-maxing a bad thing?

You did minmax. The term isn't confusing particularly - it's taking the lowest possible stats in one area of little direct relevance to the primary abilities a character class and using the points to buy the maximum stats in the ones that are. That's what you did, and your GM was right on the...

    D&D 5E Swords & Sorcery House Rules

Here are some S&S house rules I have used for running Primeval Thule. Feel free to use them yourself and report back on how you like them, or if you discover issues in-play. These have been played from 1st to 7th levels in the campaign, and been modified a few times, but I am sure they could be...

    D&D 5E Your one hope for D&D?

I introduced a system which at it's core made natural healing towards the 'gritty' end - especially if no healing kits were available, but also did the same for magical healing, which requires Healing HD to be used up on a one for one basis with the level of the slot used to fuel the healing...

D&D 5E The Dangers of Overreliance on Leomund's Tiny Hut (3rd Level Spell)

I've seen both spells used many times in the last 39 years of gaming - but then they do tend to be less prevalent in hack'n'slash games. They are in my experience used by the more thoughtful player at the table, and certainly by players whose GMs make an engaging challenge out of the exploration...

D&D 5E The Dangers of Overreliance on Leomund's Tiny Hut (3rd Level Spell)

On a forum with sequential posts, someone always has the last word. I signalled my intention to leave the discussion here and invited them to join me. If they want one final post, then having already left the matter behind me, I will not be responding further. It isn't a question of fairness -...

D&D 5E The Dangers of Overreliance on Leomund's Tiny Hut (3rd Level Spell)

You use the word 'semantics' to characterise what I say and then use precisely this yourself. I went to some length to point out the word hemisphere didn't appear in the spell description (and it doesn't) and also made it clear it is a standard term used only in defining range/area. I gave you...

    D&D 5E Your one hope for D&D?

It's not bad at all, but it still has far too much magic in it and I had to introduce houserules for gritty healing, magical backlash and spiritual corruption to make it feel right - all S&S staples.

D&D 5E The Dangers of Overreliance on Leomund's Tiny Hut (3rd Level Spell)

A dome covers a hemispherical area, a hemisphere is not a dome. This isn't complex stuff - look them up in a dictionary. I am not making an argument, I am explaining that a mistake has been made in interpretation. To use a simple illustration; Get a glass bowl and turn it upside down. This is...

    D&D 5E Your one hope for D&D?

I would like to see someone (WoTC or Third Party) release a really good low-fantasy, dark, gritty 5th Edition gameworld - original and as gripping as Greyhawk back when it first got going, or Dark Sun when it was a new idea. I was originally thinking maybe a Swords and Sorcery gameworld or 5th...

D&D 5E The Dangers of Overreliance on Leomund's Tiny Hut (3rd Level Spell)

The range being hemispherical does not prevent it being a dome, as mentioned many times exclusively in the description. The area of the spell is hemispherical, the spell itself is a dome. Not all hemispherical areas are domes, but all domes (from the latin 'domus') encompass hemispherical or...

    D&D 5E Detecting Monster's Resistance to Fire

I tend to use the example of a monk in a sealed room the same shape and radius as a fireball who gets hit by a fireball and manages to 'avoid' ALL the damage. Logic has only a shaky position at the D&D table sometimes. :) I think there is a grey area in this example too, and skill rolls are a...
