D&D General A more story-based mechanic for "somewhat grittier" healing - has this been done in D&D before, and would you use it?

Yes, agreed. It's too punishing otherwise. I really like the concept, but this set of mechanics needs work (Which is not a surprise, given when I was thinking it through :-D)

    D&D 5E Necromancy Cantrip Idea

The rule is generally that spell visual effects are immaterial unless they say so. There are spells that conjure dust clouds, but don't need to mention that the cloud is not targetable. It's only spells that create discrete moving objects that tend to have mention of game stats (so for instance...

    D&D 5E Necromancy Cantrip Idea

Hmm. I don't like the automatic damage on a cantrip, for either version. I'm not sure about the concentration, either, but here's an attempt at the concept that I think is about balanced: Devouring wraiths Necromancy cantrip Casting time: 1 bonus action Range: 30' Components: V, S, M (a weapon...

D&D General A more story-based mechanic for "somewhat grittier" healing - has this been done in D&D before, and would you use it?

So, the "4e healing is best" thread has turned into the old "Are hit points meat?" argument, which will never be solved because it is about fundamental differences of approach to the fiction of the game. I started writing this in there, but it's clearly its own question (and will probably...

D&D General 4e Healing was the best D&D healing

I think both 4e and 5e are an improvement on anything prior. Broadly speaking, I see the 5e healing system as having a similar conceptual source to 4e, but a very different expression. 4e is great at making stamina a resource, and the number of healing surges meant that you could actually treat...

D&D 5E Reduced standard array in exchange for a bonus feat at 1st.

The issue here is that conflating an array or point buy option to "buy" a feat with rolling is... well, it's not comparing apples to oranges, but it is comparing apples to pears, I think. People will roll for stats for a large number of reasons, but I think a large proportion of the people who...

WotC Older D&D Books on DMs Guild Now Have A Disclaimer

I believe that direct attacks against the person would be against the rules already.

D&D 5E What "attack"-oriented cantrips do you like the most?

The key thing is, if shillelagh scaled as a cantrip, it would be horribly overpowered if any other class took it or if the druid gained additional attacks or options - that could be as simple as a high elf druid with greenflame blade or booming blade. As is, it is good enough to make a...

Checked and unchecked poll entries with the dark theme are almost indistinguishable

Yeah, I'd been using it. Sorry, I was taking a short break between meetings and should have added that to the post. I just couldn't see a post in here about the issue, so wanted to make sure it was being looked at. Thanks,

D&D 5E What "attack"-oriented cantrips do you like the most?

I was literally scrolling through this thread to make sure someone made my point. Produce Flame is definitely a favourite of mine, for a lovely mix of theme and utility

WotC Older D&D Books on DMs Guild Now Have A Disclaimer

... This is a very odd reply. You seem to be making a negative point against mine, but not actually addressing the point that I made. Now, I don't think my point was particularly important, but if you wish to argue against it, please actually argue against it. You may also find it useful to look...

WotC Older D&D Books on DMs Guild Now Have A Disclaimer

Oh, I disagree. While this is very much only one step on the path, there is a thing that these changes do deprive people of: An excuse.

    D&D 5E The Dumbest Rogue

It adds a few and takes a few away. It removes the whip (which is a pretty nice rogue weapon), it removes the rapier (which apparently you don't like). It adds a few pretty d4 or d6 weapons, the only one of which that really adds anything is the hand axe (and I do love the hand axe in 5e)...

    D&D 5E The Dumbest Rogue

I wouldn't say that helps. Light weapons generally do less damage, and the ones that make best sense for sneak attack are already finesse - including the scimitar.

    D&D 5E The Dumbest Rogue

I have had a lot of fun with something orthogonal to this concept - the Strength-based pure rogue. Mountain Dwarf rogue[Assassin], using shortsword and shield. Expertise in Athletics, and Shield Master at level 4. We ended up finding a gauntlet of ogre power, which got his strength up to 19...

    D&D 3E/3.5 Comparison to 3.5e

Can we please skip the edition warring? It's fine to dislike 4e, but I really wish we could move past this sort of factionalism. 4e wasn't my favourite edition, but it absolutely was the best edition (at the time and, for some, still) for a significant proportion of the playerbase. Hell, my...

    D&D 3E/3.5 Comparison to 3.5e

It depends heavily on the group, I find. I have one group who really buy in to it. I bought a set of gold-coloured metal dice dice for it, and it's become a ritual for the group to pour out their dicebags at the start of a session and blame/shame/priase people for what they did to deserve the...

    D&D 3E/3.5 Comparison to 3.5e

I think people underestimate the 5e chargen system, to be honest. Sure, there are fewer decisions to make, but each of the decisions has a large impact on the character I will play. Even if all else was the same, a paladin with the Urchin background is going to be very different to play (and...
