    Imagine, no Battlemat...

I'm sure you could. Personally, I'd have little or no interest in playing D&D without some kind of tactical display. The games I've seen (since 1980 or so) that didn't use miniatures were...uh, I'll be polite and just say "not to my taste."

does hit point loss = damage

This is incorrect. A "hit" is always an actual hit. If it wasn't, poison (to name just one thing) wouldn't work the way it does--as you recognized. This is correct, however. The essential thing to understand is that any hit that doesn't take you to negative hp (or kill you outright via...

Wizards' Rules of the Game articles

Not necessarily true. I have e-mailed Wizards (twice), pointing out errors in the RotG articles, and they've corrected the article (once), but I've also learned some things I didn't already know by reading the articles. You're never such an expert that you can't learn from someone else.

    Explosive Runes inside locked spellbook

There are no "undetectable" traps (for rogues), only very high Search DCs. He should have been able to detect the trap.

    D&D 3E/3.5 1e to 3e Introduction

The principle of THAC0 worked the same in 1e, and was used by many of us before 2e came along and made it the standard.

rotating DMs same group of characters...would it work?

Yeah, but would the result have been any different if he'd been the only DM? (And if so, why?)

So How Does Your Group Distribute Treasure?

This is exactly how we do it, and I agree it works really well. In fact, I can hardly stand to play in groups that don't do it this way, because the distribution never seems to work out fairly or believably. (The idea of communist adventuring parties--especially if players change their...

    Broken HiPS?

I'm with Iku Rex. Shadow blur only works in shadow (or total darkness) anyway, so anytime you're shadow blurred you'd also be able to hide in plain sight. All this nonsense about it being "your own shadow" or not is irrelevant.

rotating DMs same group of characters...would it work?

Many years ago, my brother and I shared DMing duty for our groups of friends because everyone liked to play more than they liked to DM. Once the other players got the hang of all the rules, we'd get an occasional volunteer to DM and my brother and I got to play our characters at the same time...

    What would you do?

Man, that's a good idea! I'm going to be sure and save my copy of ToEE for when it comes time to teach my sons how to play D&D.

    CR for symbol of death?

Spell level +1, actually. Symbol of death would be a CR 9 trap.

Am I breaking any rules with this tactic?

    And that's exactly correct! :)

Am I breaking any rules with this tactic?

Wrong. You do not roll initiative until both sides have become aware of each other. "One Side Aware First: In this case, you determine how much time the aware side has before the unaware side can react. Sometimes, the unaware side has no time to do anything before the aware side gets a chance...

    Merciful weapon ability

For what it's worth, I asked Wizards a similar question back in 3.0 days. Here's what it looked like: They said the correct answer was #3. Based on that, I'd say the answer to your question is C: the fire energy is dealing the damage, rather than the weapon itself. As for the wounding...

    Chill Touch

Because that rule applies to spells like teleport and water walk, not chill touch. "Some touch spells, such as teleport and water walk, allow you to touch multiple targets. You can touch as many willing targets as you can reach as part of the casting, but all targets of the spell must be...
