    D&D stats for Shrek

Yes, I know this is silly but after watching Shrek I, II with the kids for the fifteenth time I couldn't resist trying to stat him out as a D&D character. So here it goes: Shrek “Ogre” Rog3/Bbn1/Ftr6; HD 3d6+15 (Rogue), 1d12+5 (Barbarian) , 6d10+30 (Fighter) ; hp 80; Init +7; Spd 40; AC 16...

    Gaming Stores north of Boston

I'm looking for a good gaming store (i.e. lots of d20 and minis) north of Boston. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Core concept or rule that just bugs you beyond your ability to put up with it?

Alhazred, I've run several alignmnent-free campaigns. D&D runs just fine without alignment but you do have to make a few alterations -For classes like Paladin and Cleric, replace alignment requirements with codes of ethics or conduct based on the cause or deity they follow. -Make clerical...

Prestige Classes: Too much of a good thing?

Your definition of the term "power creep" strikes me as curiously narrow. Power creep may mean something specific in collectible games but surely the term, used in a general sense (i.e. the gradual increase of player power), applies to D&D. The fact that PrCs are both optional and open to...

Core concept or rule that just bugs you beyond your ability to put up with it?

More rules that bug me: -Psionics: all of it and the very idea of it. What is a rules set with abilities like "Psycholuminescene," "Ectoplasmic Armor," and "Biofeedback" doing in a quasi-medieval fantasy game like D&D?! As these names make clear, psionics draws its inspiration from sci-fi and...

    HP rolls:reroll < CON MOD

As DM I use what I call the "get half, roll half" rule. PCs get 1/2 their Hit Die and then roll their HD halved. Thus a cleric (d8 HD) would automatically get 4 hp (1/2 HD) and then roll 1d4 (HD halved) for the rest. This ensures that players don't get stuck with low hp and generally reduces...

    Victorian Era Adventure

Thanks to all for the great Mini links! I found figures that will be perfect for my in-the-works "quasi-Victorian, slightly magical England-like nation explores Lost Continent" campaign.

Core concept or rule that just bugs you beyond your ability to put up with it?

I like AoO in some respects but in my experience it does slow the game down a bit because players spend more time moving their figures around testing from AoO zones.

Core concept or rule that just bugs you beyond your ability to put up with it?

In no particular order: -Alignments: adds nothing to game, stiffles role-playing, source of pointless arguments -Darkvision: the dark should be scary. -Zero risk magic: D&D magic works like a good appliance: simple and reliable...and boring. -Experience system based on body counts. -Attack...

Prestige Classes: Too much of a good thing?

Crothian, you seem to have acquired a loyal band of Ditto-heads! The fact that WotC has retired or retooled a number of PrCs suggests that they themselves know that some of what they put out is, well, crud. I don't object to PrCs just because this one or than does not suit my tastes for purely...

    Jonathan Strange and Dr. Norrell

I finished just the book. Both in flavor and historical setting, its pretty far removed from the standard fanasty genre that inspires much of D&D. Nonetheless, it was a fasinating book with an intriguing take on the nature and practice of magic. The material on the realms of Faerie was also...

Prestige Classes: Too much of a good thing?

I'm not sure I see the benefit of flooding D&D with lots of hit or miss PrCs. Why should we as consumers (our true relationship with WotC and d20) have to sift through piles of crud to find the good stuff? The problem with a bad PrC is that DMs and players often don't realize its unbalanced...

Can someone explain what "1st ed feel" is?

1st Edition feel: Well...for starters, the rules were clunky, inconsistant and riddled with Gygaxian quirkiness. But in the beginning no one really cared because the whole concept of the RPG was so new and exciting. A DM could whip up a dungeon with an architectually absurd collection of rooms...

Prestige Classes: Too much of a good thing?

With the release of Complete Adventure, I'm beginning to wonder if D&D is becoming oversaturated with an ever rising tide of new Prestige classes (WotC or others). The sheer number of PrCs creates issues of game balance and power creep. At least to my eyes, they seem to be getting over-powered...
