D&D 4E Rumor control: Lucca 4e seminar report inaccuracies

Isn't this whole thread an argument for arguments sake? ;) WotC has been pretty clear in stating the D20 license is dead. I'm sure they did their market research and consumer surveys, and between the suits, the bean counters and the lawyers D20 got wrapped in a carpet and tossed in a roadside...

D&D 4E Rumor control: Lucca 4e seminar report inaccuracies

Didn't make the numbers up... tho' the internet net source I found them on might have, who knows? The link: http://oracle.wizards.com/scripts/wa.exe?A2=ind0411b&L=dnd-l&D=1&P=26404 and the relevant text: Here is the information I found from one source, which cites sales numbers from the 2003...

D&D 4E Rumor control: Lucca 4e seminar report inaccuracies

Console games in 2004 were a $9.9 Billion dollar industry. RPG sales were in the range of $32 to $67 million in 2003 (the industry is harder to track then console cames). RPGs are pennies on the dollar in comparison. They don't compare very well, and suggesting that WotC model itself on the...

The problem is WotC doesn't want to endorse any such license. If they do issue such a license they run the appearance of endorsing said products. There have been some huge stinkers bearing the D20 logo... restrictions and guidelines would not have prevented the crap from hitting the fan... the...

D&D 4E Rumor control: Lucca 4e seminar report inaccuracies

No flames here. Differing opinions only. How do you control "crunch" prior to its publication? How do you set guidelines for rules? I understand how you can put some manner of control over the type of "fluff" that comes out, but "crunch" is hard to put limits on prior to it being published...

D&D 4E Rumor control: Lucca 4e seminar report inaccuracies

I remember a certain D20 publisher that shoveled a mountain of pure garbage in the early days of 3.0 (I have since been using pages of their products to line my bird cage)... I doubt they would have been put of by a fee of $500 a title. Even $5000 a title might have been ok by them during the...

Where are the advertisements these days? Dragon? Dungeon? Their gone... game over man! ;) What do we have left? KotDT? I buy via word of mouth or impulse based on flipping thru a product. The D20 logo does not sell to me... I got burned at the beginning of the D20 era... never again...

Fees are not the secret for success. A snazy logo, backed by WotC, is not the secret to success. Quality products backed by word of mouth and luck... that makes or breaks rpg publishers.

The D20 license was an experiment that failed overall. The OGL was a success. I figure WotC did well in making this change. Course, I figured that the D20 license was going to change greatly or die... based on what i thought was Scott's attempt to avoid answering the question directly. I was...

Yeah, the OGL and D20 license are completely different animals. Scott, either the D20 license is going away with 4e or you are changing it. Avoiding its discussion in a thread that screams "discuss me" indicates it will not be the same as under 3e ;)

I miss Dual Classing and the power of nostalgia

If i remember correctly the bard was the exception to the rule. I recall a "two class max" for humans, except bards. Half elves multi-classed, except when they intended to be a bard, in which case they changed classes using the same rules as humans. Bards were outside the regular rules and an...

Eh, you forced me to elaborate on my point... or points... which was good. Going from 3e to 4e is probably going to resemble going from 3e to True20 or even Savage Worlds... you might be able to save the flavor but the crunch will be very different if not incompatible in places.

It the nature of the beast called "opinion". When your opinion is backed by other posters then their opinion is valid... when opinions don't match up their opinions are invalid. Opinions are not facts. Personal bias will always be a part of which polls / opinions / "facts" one will consider...

3.75 was dead before it was born. Those that would have been needed to be the driving forces behind it have indicated it is not a viable alternative. As they are successful in the RPG business I expect they have a better idea of what makes good business sense then the internet masses. (I...

The original poster suggested that he would have to make up classes / races himself. I indicated that many would be in the same boat. What about Favored Souls (a perennial ENWorld favorite)? Scouts? Numerous other classes that WotC has added to the mix? None of these will be in the 1st 4e...

Quite a few people had problems with 3e. 3e did kill my desire to DM. From a player's perspective it is a much better system with the abundance of options... that same abundance makes it less fun for me as a DM. Quite a few people have problems with what they perceive 4e will be as a system...

I'm fairly sure rules for half-orcs as PCs will be in the MM. As for druids... if you are willing to wait a week after release I am sure there will be multiple free variants on this site and others to choose from. I fully expect the community will fill in the gaps where necessary. I believe...

    D&D 4E 4e Design and JRR Tolkien

I got heavy into Fantasy reading with the release of The Chronicles of Thomas Covenent and The Sword of Shanara. I had just finished the LotR triliogy and was hungry for books of the genre. I was in 8th grade at the time, so that would put the date round 80/81. I had no problem finding books...

That is an issue with changing from 3.0/3.5 to 4.0... i don't see how that is an issue with a new PH, DMG and MM every year. Do you currently add every new 3.5 MM to your homebrew's mix or do you hand pick what fits (assuming you even buy the MMs beyond the first). I expect "core" will be next...
