Higher level characters ONLY fight orcs

Be wary though, this can be a two edged sword. You dont want your campaign to develop "Oblivion Syndrome" where as players level, everything around them just gets tougher, and regardless of how many levels they gain, the number of orcs they can kill in a round never improves.

Blog: Sneak Attack Vs. Backstab 3/28/12

Not really, just what I always pictured it in my mind. Im really "Eh" on using HP as a measure of damage outside of combat. Take for example, you run a sword through someone not in the context of a fight. They die right? No, they take 1d8+5 and because they have enough hit points they say "Tis...

Higher level characters ONLY fight orcs

One of the technique I have always liked to employ is to occasionally throw enemies at the players which they faced a number of levels ago. The reason being is that so often, but continually upping the ante in terms of what the players face, it can be hard to appreciate character growth. "Who...

Blog: Sneak Attack Vs. Backstab 3/28/12

Im just not fond of the depiction of sneak attack as a purely combat mechanic, which it really ended up as in 3.x and 4e. I always saw snea k attack/backstap as more of an RP enabler. e.g. You sneak up on the guard. <Roll a bunch of whatever rolls required, not a damage based mechanic, more...

    Creature Rank vs SOD effects

Got a good thumbs down to that one :p. I never thought it was the greatest idea, I was just reading one SOD's and Minions at the same time and the ideas converged. No problem with that, thats why you put ideas on the board, this one just didnt stick. Ummm, but as to this response. Do you...

    Creature Rank vs SOD effects

From the outset, Im going to say that this idea is a bit contraversial, but if there is a time for getting ideas out there and making mistakes, its early in the project, so here goes. 4e introduced enemy "types" (i.e. Minion/Normal/Elite/Solo). One of its inovations I think worked nicely. Now...

    Multiclassing: What I'm hoping for

shidaku Your not half wrong. Its hard to speculate on how multiclassing should work until we have a clear idea on how classes should work. That said, Im actually looking at 4e multiclassing. Now, I thought 4e multiclassing was not very good. In PHB you have a multiclass feat (which was always a...

    Taunts & Marks vs. Challenges

I'm happy with these terms. Interestingly Mike Mearls recently said he was happier with the idea that classes are officially role-less, but that they come with advice on how they can be played in certain roles. I'm very happy with this approach, it both acknowledges the existence and purpose of...

    Kill the fighter

What was interesting about his example was that the fighter was able to backup the rogue. Sure, hes a fighter, he fights...that what they do! But in a non fight situation he was able to contribute without stealing the show. Then come fight time, the fighter is the main player and the rogue...

    Taunts & Marks vs. Challenges

You make it sound like we are emu's hiding our heads in the sand. Your right. The fact that they aren't formal doesn't mean they don't exist. They do exist, by proxy they always have. I just think of my oh-so-casual group. In the end did formalization of roles enhance the game for them? No...

Throwing down the Tyranny of the Spellcaster.

Im kind of for chaos and consequence. To me, spell casters are wild cards. They defy the laws of nature and physics and throw curve balls into the game. They are unreliable, potent and chaotic (at least, thats what I would like arcane to be :) ). I prefer that spells really are potent, but...

    Taunts & Marks vs. Challenges

Then I will choose to take it as such. I dont mind marks per-sae or "tanking mechanics" as such. Frankly, even you you were to use a "role-less" game (as I prefer) the fighter does stand out as the guy who can take the most and therefore the one who should put himself forward as a target. The...

Weapons: What Are They Good For?

Absolutely agree. I get specialization both in game terms of allowing the fighter a little extra "schtick" and also in terms of real world use. Unfortunately its in game effect was to turn the fighter into a bit of one trick pony (at least pre 4e, which tackled the issue differently). Take the...

    Taunts & Marks vs. Challenges

Yes, Im pretty sure I am. In fact, Im pretty sure I have for the past 30 years. You know, it is possible for people to play the game in different ways. I found your response more than little offensive and derogatory there.

Weapons: What Are They Good For?

Just curiously, when did this bit about bows having "Rapid Fire" actually start. Have you tried shooting a bow? Its a long drawn out process which requires time to draw a bead if you want any hope of hitting anything. Sure, if you train you might get your speed up, but one might argue that if...

    Taunts & Marks vs. Challenges

I have a really easy solution for this...I just dont want the concept of the tank, or the controller, or the striker. Hell, I just dont want roles. Again, its opinion. But I get amused reading thread like this. May you who want roles find a method that works for you, and may the designers of 5e...

    Kill the fighter

Caster is where 3e multiclassing fell over. That said, a friend of mine used to play this MMO version of NWN2, and man you should have seen the powerbuilds in that. Just rediculous. It was a game that required you to powerbuild (not my cuppa tea) OR DIE, and just about all the powerbuilds had a...

    The Tyranny of the Sword

Im More T1, but I like my RPG's more identifiable. For instance, I have never played an Eastern style CRPG, yet name the Western oriented CRPG and I have played every single (decent) one that has come out. Generally what that comes back to is Eastern RPG's are more oriented around the...
