What direction will D&D head in?

My guess is that 5e will be the "Avatar: the Last Airbender" Edition. 6e will be written precisely in the style and play in precisely the style of 1e, but will be written off as worse than Gygax by grognards and just plain weird by new fans. 7e will be released two months later in collectible...

    Alignment Differences?

None of the D&D alignment systems have ever really done it for me. Gimmie a system like True20's natures or Mutants & Masterminds' complications, or even d20 Modern's allegiances, and I'm a happy man.

Does anyone actually like Dragonborn and Tieflings?

I've always sort of liked tieflings. Dragonborn I'm relatively indifferent on. I'm still glad to see something other than the typical fantasy races, though (loved most of the critters from the 3.5 XPH, for instance).

    What exactly is a Grognard?

This seems to fit pretty well.

Do nonmagical 1/day abilities damage suspension of disbelief?

Because it's a matter of narrative control. A player only gets to declare once per day that the conditions are right at this particular time to use a certain power once per day. Maybe it's not about being flat-footed, but about having stepped forward with the left foot with the head turned left...

Do nonmagical 1/day abilities damage suspension of disbelief?

*shrug* 1/day abilities require openings that don't come up very often (or about once per day). I don't see what the hubub's about.

Should NPCs Have to Follow the Same Rules as PCs?

Yes and no. All of the characters, PC or NPC, who share a game world should use the same basic rules for creating them. However, this is assuming that the rules for creating the PCs are flexible enough to cover everything from human fighters to ancient golden wyrms. If not, then NPCs/monsters...

Pathfinder 1E Monte Cook joins Pathfinder team

Very interesting. I'm excited about 4e, but I'm also very interested in what comes of Pathfinder. My hat's off to Paizo for the open process they're using in developing the game.

The Odyssey System -- Stripped-down Hot Rod d20 rules

You've got me curious enough to want to check out the Odyssey System, GMSkarka. I'll have to tip my hat to you for the generosity.

    Redesigning the D&D website

Very interesting, Chibbs. I mentioned over on DA about adding the RSS feed button to the news box as one of the few things I'd change. I also like the (vastly) reduced clutter.

Are we allowed to be excited for the system, but not D&D?

See also: this. I don't think I've ever used beholders, or half of the critters in the MM as written, and I tend to shred campaign settings and then glue patches of them back together to get the game to play the way I want. D&Disms can go rot and it'd still be D&D to me, so long as it was about...

    D&D 4E Rate your interest in 4e.

    7. I'm interested. The game sounds like it'll be good. But I can't get myself in a fit over it. I'm not happy with some stuff swirling around about the GSL at all, and the DDI stuff looks weak to me so far, but the game itself looks solid enough to warrant a pre-order.

Are you bothering to read DUNGEON anymore? (and level index)

No with the caveat that I never read the thing in the first place. Same for Dragon.

How many Tools do you Need?

This is a big part of it. The fewer (and simpler) the steps involved in a player's proposition, the more likely a player is to make and carry through with the proposition when it's relevant. I refer to this as the "Forget It Test". If a rule is complicated or confusing enough that when I explain...

Pathfinder 1E Ryan Dancey Predicts Pathfinder RPG in '06

The only reason I disagree with this point is the demographic that Paizo is selling to. In theory, the big selling point for Pathfinder is that it's going to keep 3.5 alive. One of the big reasons why many people want to stick to 3.5 is their sunk cost: they're well-invested in a healthy...

Pathfinder 1E Ryan Dancey Predicts Pathfinder RPG in '06

Re-checking the dates Paizo has released so far, I think you're correct. However, I honestly do expect them to be supporting 4e as soon as it's feasable for them to do so. Right now? I understand that Paizo can't commit, and will make significant short-term gains by appealing to 3.5 fans...

Pathfinder 1E Ryan Dancey Predicts Pathfinder RPG in '06

4e seems to be offering a lot of what I'd want in a fantasy game (though the degree to which I invest in supplements with 4e is unknown until I get to read the finished product). Pathfinder looks like it's going to be solid, but I'm worried that in order for it to justify its own existence as an...

Pathfinder 1E Ryan Dancey Predicts Pathfinder RPG in '06

Or they're in my boat, and hedging their bets by having access to the latest version of D&D so they can have a better chance of finding a game on any given day.

The Odyssey System -- Stripped-down Hot Rod d20 rules

Fair enough. What would wisdom be used for task-wise then, beyond Will saves? True. Were it a more generic system, I'd disagree more, but for a game where investigation is meant to be central, I think it gets a thumbs-up. Please, sir, stay out of my head ;)
