    SWEotE. So, who's got it?

Copy arrived today. Looks nice. Will take some time to read it all. Also got GM Kit and a set of dice to add to those in the Beginner Game.

    Missing in action

I guess my point is that it just feels strange to not have a 'truly' active version of D&D around. Looking forward to seeing what Next actually brings back to the table when it's finished.

    Missing in action

Don't post often but had this thought rattling around my head the last couple of days: it feels like Dungeons and Dragons has gone MIA. To clarify, I don't recall a time since being introduced to D&D that I wasn't involved in a game of it. Right now, I'm not interested in Next simply because it...

(More) Problems with the Reaper Feat

Just a quick observation. The OP raises some valid points, but I get the feeling that DDN is going to rely more RAI than RAW. 4e brought clear keywords and used these as baselines. 5e feels more 'old school' and this requires more DM judgement.

D&D 5E Monte Cook Leaves WotC - No Longer working on D&D Next [updated]

"I am surprised, and frankly saddened, by Monte’s decision to leave the D&D Next design team. " This is the only thing that bothers me. I read it to say that Mike did not expect Monte to leave and that means plans they have would include his presence, and now those plans need to change. This...

Seminar Transcript - Reimagining Skills and Ability Scores

The talk of themes for 5e and how they interact with race/class makes me think that 5e core will be similar to original 1e. Core Races: Human, Elf, Dwarf, Half-elf, Halfling, Gnome (can't remember exactly what races were in 1e, but you'll have the usual suspects). Core Classes: Fighter, Cleric...

Seminar Transcript - Reimagining Skills and Ability Scores

I don't see any degrading. Just re-classifying. There have been many comments on race/class bloat in 4e. A bit of rationalising would be welcomed.

Seminar Transcript - Reimagining Skills and Ability Scores

Agree that dumping is not new, but I never noticed such an impact until 4e, where I saw so many characters that were focused on 1 or 2 scores only (dependant upon class/powers) and very rarely skills. This led to situations where a player would simply say, 'My character can't do that." with the...

Seminar Transcript - Reimagining Skills and Ability Scores

My earlier post may have sounded slightly off topic, not helped because I falied to make a point. Rolling ability scores has its flaws and poor rolls have ruined may players' games. The point buy system is what we use and I can't see this not being included - but if not, then house rule. I...

Seminar Transcript - Reimagining Skills and Ability Scores

Really looking forward to D&D Next. I hear people saying they are worried that it is pulling too much from previous editions, but this is what excites me the most. I played 4e from the moment it was released and enjoyed it for a couple of years - I still play in a 4e game now. But it was...

A design goal: making different races FEEL different.

I like the idea of having race and class development as separate element. You choose your race and you choose your class. You do some adventuring and you improve in your class as well as becoming more of a racial paragon. Mixed in with this is the cultural element of maybe spending time with...

Oops, I failed a Breathe check

I don't post often, but I have to say that Pilgrim's original statement came across as blunt and harsh. I consider gaming as a social activity and everyone at the table is a 'player', whether DM/GM or PC and entitled to make input into the game and should have fun. Reading further, I can accept...

Pathfinder 1E WotBS Pathfinder Compiled Hardcover?

Hmm... I asked a question about WotBS and PF vs. 4e and most responses suggested that 4e was generally the way to go. If there weren't a 4e version of WotBS already, then I'd say yes, but my guess is that most people who are playing the adventures under PF are converting it themselves (as I...

    Healing Surge Damage

It seems that wlmartin is standing fast on this one. Everyone has their pet hates, and it feels like this is one of them for him. I don't think that anyone is saying PCs should use extended rests to simply recharge daily powers, but in the context of good story telling, what is wrong with PCs...

    Healing Surge Damage

While I can see the argument for not allowing PCs to take extended rests after every encounter, I don't see how a DM can simply deny a group the option. If the PCs come across a particularly difficult encounter, or maybe all the rolls go against them, they are perfectly in their right to go and...

    WotBS WotBS - v3.5 (PF) or 4e?

Thanks all for your replies. I've discussed this a little with my group and they would like to try PF. To that end, I am going to DM a pathfinder adventure and see how we all feel. If we prefer PF, then I guess we will switch. If we're undecided or not impressed, we'll stick with 4e. I like...

    WotBS WotBS - v3.5 (PF) or 4e?

Here's the story: I started WotBS about a year ago a FLGS using the 4e version. I managed to get about half way through Shelter from the Storm before I stopped DMing at that location (for personal reasons). I started again and have managed to get about half way through Adventure 2 (easier to...

    D&D 4E The "We Can't Roleplay" in 4E Argument

I have to say that my experience is that 4ed had the effect of lessening the immersion in the game world. I think that one of the reasons was the lack of 'fluff' and a clear focus on mechanics. The core world is left to each DM and this gives most groups nothing to start off with. As has been...
