Manual of the Planes is a bit meh. Plane Above and Plane Below complement one another very well. I think I preferred Plane Above, myself, but you can't really go wrong with either of them.

The "modelled after ancient civilizations" theme is pretty much how Dark Sun works - each city-state is inspired by an ancient real-world counterpart. Tyr is Phoenician, Raam is Egyptian, Urik is Babylonian, Balic is Roman, Draj is Aztec, Nibenay is Chinese and Gulg is African.

I've spent about an equal amount of time playing and DM'ing - another player and I basically split DM duties on a campaign and now we're each running our own solo.

Just wanted to say how much I appreciate the thoughts presented in this thread - I'm in the process of adapting the 4E ToH Superadventure for my Dark Sun campaign (replacing Acererak with Kalak!) and this has already been helpful in a number of ways.

For what it's worth, the seeker paragon feat "Primal Eye" adds their attribute bonus to their damage roll on ranged basic attacks. The current CB adds it to their at-wills that can be used as basic attacks as well (Guardian Harrier for example), which seems to me to be as close to an official...
