    D&D 5E Rogues & damage...

ruleslawyer Very much agreed... The only way a thief would come out of most adventures with a girdle of giant strength is if they were quite skilled and the fighters didn't even know it was ever there.

D&D 5E Should player's assume if it's in the DMG then it's RAW?

I think in this case, the player should have asked instead of assumed. Not having received the DMG, I can't tell you how things are presented, but I'd expect everything there is really up to the DM on how they want to tailor their game. I wouldn't have any issue with one of my players reading...

    D&D 5E Rogues & damage...

That's a great ruling, but that certainly wasn't the case at every AD&D table. In some groups I played, you couldn't both Move Silently and Hide in Shadows at the same time. Others you could. Both were supported by the rules in the book. I never played where bonuses were multiplied, but I...

    D&D 5E Rogues & damage...

I disagree. Thieves in 1e typically used d4/d6 type weapons. Backstab typically required a lot of prep work to land, what with needing to be behind and the target being unaware. I've only seen a 1e backstab happen in the first round of combat, afterwards the bad guys were aware of the rogue...

    D&D 5E Rogues & damage...

Backstab was relatively strong in 1e and 2e, when you could get it off. Thieves also had the benefit of being XP advantaged when leveling, so they might have been a level or so higher than the rest of the party. But there were nowhere near the consistent damage per round as a ranger or...

D&D 5E A running list of questions from a new player/new DM. Other n00bs please feel free to add in.

If it helps, one way to look at it is your character level tells you what your proficiency bonus is, ranging from +2 to +6. Your background and class tells you what ability checks you can apply your proficiency bonus to, through skills, tools, weapon proficiency, and spells.

D&D 5E Drow "Sunlight Sensitivity" workarounds?

If I were to consider sunlight sensitivity in drow to be purely optical, I would consider it much more severe my own light sensitivity. Some of the other suggestions in this thread regarding the slitted goggles could be useful, but I agree, it's trading an easy to handle drawback (disadvantage)...

D&D 5E Drow "Sunlight Sensitivity" workarounds?

For me, I have to side with the folks stating that Sunlight Sensitivity is one of the defining characteristics of being a drow. Someone who doesn't want to play with that, is not really looking at playing a drow. If I were feeling generous, I'd even posit that Drizz't's "getting over" sunlight...

D&D 5E Best disposal of body or item spell!

From a story perspective, I would imagine an evil artifact would find a way to be found. I don't think tossing the One Ring deep into the western ocean would have prevented Sauron's rise to power. It is a pretty slick use to slow down Team Evil for a while, especially since evil relics (and...

    D&D 5E 5E Player's Handbook owners: What's the current condition of your book's binding?

I've got two, one from my FLGS, the other from Amazon. Both are in excellent shape, even while being manhandled by my teenage son. ;)

D&D 5E Character sheet: Ability score or modifier in the big box?

I voted prefer stat/score. In fact, when I printed out character sheets to help my family make characters for Lost Mine, I had them just put the score in the larger box, modifier in the smaller. I didn't even recognize that the pregens were different until afterwards. Still I can understand...

D&D 5E Monster Manual and Players Hand Book Power Levels

And on topic, to the OP... you hit it on the head. If you wish, you can scale all the numbers for defense up as long as you scale all the numbers for offense up correspondingly. If the number on the sword, or the total bonus on the armor is giving you concern... it's not that hard to change...

D&D 5E Monster Manual and Players Hand Book Power Levels

Good point, next time I run my 5e home group, I'll have to make sure I bring out my 3.5 MM. That'll really scare them. :]

    D&D 5E Optimal Multiclassing

Those are good points. It's interesting that it's three martial classes that have dual requirements. As for fighter, in the playtest there was some uproar about folks wanting to play multiclassed finesse fighters, so I think the OR comes from an attempt to accommodate both str and dex fighter...

    D&D 5E Optimal Multiclassing

True... To your point above, the decision on what traits stack with multitasking, I believe, are a balance issue. Not to make sure that characters are balanced within a group, or even between groups, but to what level of balance do you want to encourage single classing over multiclassing...

    D&D 5E Optimal Multiclassing

Is it? If I'm sitting at 4/3 (either martial or caster), and I'm taking another level, I have a meaningful choice to make. Bump my level 4 to 5 and get an extra attack, or an extra spell level (and maybe fast movement for Barb), or bump my level 3 to 4 and get an ability score boost/feat. It...

D&D 5E Rate the 5e player character classes

That's an interesting definition of Theme, but I not sure how well it will resonate with folks. This strikes me as a measure of how much the class deviates from the core four. For me, a better measure of theme might be how evocative the class is along a niche, and how much the mechanics...

D&D 5E How should I lead my players from Phandalin to Greenest?

I'm looking at doing the same thing, and here are my thoughts on how to blend the two... Do what was posted above and file off the name Greenest and carve in Phandalin. For me, this makes it an excellent tie in as the PCs have ties and connections with the town, so it makes some of the...

D&D 5E HoTDQ - Went way better than expected

For those worried about the "left dying" scene after Cyanwrath, I'd recommend playing a little free and loose with the exact timing of death saves for the player. The point, at least on my read of the scene, is to build up enmity between players and the interim BBG, to encourage the characters...

    D&D 5E So who is playing 5E?

Currently Playing LMoP for my family, we've finished the Redbrands and now where on the hunt for the Cragmaw. Players include: My 13 yr old son who started with the pregen Wizard (through the Cragmaw Hideout), swapped it with a Gnome Wizard ("Gnome's get +2 to Int!" he says) throughout the...
