D&D 5E 5E Player's Handbook owners: What's the current condition of your book's binding?

What condition is your 5E Player's Handbook in?

  • I DO NOT own a 5E Player's Handbook, but my friend has one and it's beginning to fall apart.

Mine is fine. No problems so far for the other 4 books in our game. Of the roughly copies we have sold, only one has come back with the binding issue. ( I won't give numbers, but that is way under 1%)
Yeah, and the early trend here suggests we might end up seeing similarly-low results.

My "random guess estimate" was 20% defective, which would indicate a huge problem. 1% would just be a hiccup, and significantly less than 1% approaches the realm of normally acceptable rates of defect. [Caveats: 1) This assessment assumes this problem is limited to the Player's Handbook, not recurring throughout the product line; 2) Our data is from an admittedly non-representative sample that comes exclusively from ENWorld posters less than two months after the book's release date; and 3) My analyses here are completely amateur, as I'm neither a trained analyst nor publishing industry insider--I'm trying to be objective, and hopefully I'm doing alright.]

From the poll, it looks like about 8%, enough to get internet traction...but no problem for me, as mine is good!

And thats what counts.
Agreed: the internet's perception is a whole 'nother variable that we're not analyzing here.

Mine nearly fell apart, but Elmer's glue largely fixed it. Just a few pages stick out a bit from the book (couldn't quite get them square to glue in).

I responded as "coming loose"--the pages were about 1/2 out (top half not attached).

Nice poll BTW. I'd no idea how many people were or were not having problems...
Thanks bud! I'm trying to be open-minded and objective with my data-collection.

I already wish I could add another option for people who've had defective books and returned them, and I also wish it was possible for folks to change their answers--I suspect that at least some folks will have a different response in a few months.

I am sorry to hear so many people are having trouble with their books. Roughly 1 in 10 is a lot it seems to me. It seems like they are aware of the issue and trying to solve it for the DMG, and working working out returns for those who do have the problem.

Mine, from Amazon, is fine, as are the other two PHBs that are in use in my group (as of our last game). I'll ask on Sunday, but no one has said anything about book issues.

Mine is in near-perfect condition. However, it's mostly been sitting in my "Brian Briefcase" that I can quickly pick up and take with me when a spontaneous game is organized.

I've got two, one from my FLGS, the other from Amazon. Both are in excellent shape, even while being manhandled by my teenage son. ;)

My PHB5 is fine for now, but I could tell the moment I picked it up something was wrong. The joint has no crease. Makes me nervous.

So far so good. The binding is glued rather than sewn, as I recall the 3.x books were. Storage in humid conditions will sometimes soften the adhesive during storage and shipping, so you can see a great deal of variation between different cartons and pallets. I learned more about this than I ever wanted when we shipped Midnight first edition.

I purchased my PHB and MM from the FLGS so I was able to stand there and give them both a good inspection before I bought them. I came across three PHB's that had the pages coming loose from the spine.
