    Video Card Upgrade Time

Be aware there are two different versions of the Geforce GTX 260, one with 192 cores and a newer one with 216 cores. You want the newer one. Also, The Geforce GTX 260 (216) will have it's price lowered soon: Incoming Price drop on GTX260 If that card at Fry's has 216 cores it's a real bargain...

    Playstation like controller for PC?

Check out ebay. For a whopping $4 I got an USB-converter that supports both the Playstation and the Nintendo 64 controller. It works really well, at least the N64 (I haven't tried the PS port). I've had some great time with this converter, playing Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64 etc.

    Heroes #19 :Shades of Gray/season 3/2009

Perhaps i'm stating the obvious here, but anyone else believes Sylar will team up with Danko with the purpose of taking down everyone else with abilities? Of course, this means Peter and the Rebels will try to get Sylars dad on their side. The epic battle that we didn't get this episode is...

Forked Thread: Old PC games you wish you could play again

By running windows 95 or 98 in a virtual machine (for example via VMWare, xen or QEMU) you can probably run all these games. Here's a screenshot of me running OpenBSD from my Windows 2000 box: http://psionicist.online.fr/dasvmware.gif (not the greatest screenshot ever, though it was the only...

March '09: What are you reading?

I recently ordered "The digging-est dog" and I'm wating for it to arrive. This was my favorite book, bar none, as a kid. Really looking forward reading it again, for the first time in about 20 years. As for right now I'm reading theory of computation books.

    Let The Right One In

Cheers Krug, this explains a few scenes. I checked out IMDB and apperantly the director decided against including the backstory because it was too explicit (and would require killing a live pig). Not including this scene of course makes the remaining scenes hinting of Eli's story a bit...

    Let The Right One In

Tagline: Oscar, an overlooked and bullied boy, finds love and revenge through Eli, a beautiful but peculiar girl who turns out to be a vampire. IMDB: link -> Låt den rätte komma in (2008) Imagine my surprise a month ago or so when I noticed a swedish vampire movie in the IMDB top 250 list. I...

    RE: Reveille

I'm not very active here at ENWorld anymore, but I read enough to recognize the profilic users. Frukatha seems to be such a great guy. You know the sample characters in the players handbook? There is Lidda the iconic rogue for example. Fru is sort of the iconic friend. Of course, I have never...

Feb '09: What are you reading?

I could be reading book 2 of the Baroque Cycle by Neal Stephenson (am I looking forward!). I could be reading Dune. Maybe even re-read Neuromancer. However, a new years resolution got in the way. So now I'm doing proofs instead. In a few months time I will be done with my problemset though, and...

I need a new Antivirus program.

Being the chief support guy for family and friends, I've become quite good at removing that "Antivirus 2009" malware. The SysInternals tools are invaluable, especially ProcessExplorer, RootkitRevealer, and Autoruns. I also like MalwareBytes Antimalware and Spybot S&D for cleaning up the...

    Fallout 3 - Today's the day!

I've been looking forward to this game since 1998, so my expectations are high. I re-played Fallout 1 and 2 earlier this year for the first time since the early 2000's, and I'm really looking forward seeing the next installment. (By the way, regardless of the relative eye candy of modern...

    DVD player softwares

It should be noted that these so called "codec packs" install something that is known as DirectShow filters. These are the sole reason codecs have a bad reputation in the first place. Fundamentally, a codec is just a piece of code that can decode or encode media. A DirectShow filter is a codec...

    DVD player softwares

VLC is licensed under GPL, a very common license for "free software". What is says is basically: if you're a programmer, and change this program (add features etc), you must release the code so other programmers can do the same. I can't find anything about tracking or the registry in the...

    DVD player softwares

I believe VLC supports it. It's a nice media player: VideoLAN - Free and Open Source software and video streaming solutions for every OS!

October '08: What Are You Reading?

Finished reading Anathem a while ago. This got me in a Neal Stephenson mood, so now I'm reading Quicksilver, the first book in The Baroque Cycle trilogy. It's a nice story this far.

September 2008: What are you reading?

Interesting, I also just started reading Anathem, and Watchmen is on the list (I read Arkham Asylum before that, got all three from Amazon a few days ago) I have only read about 200 pages in Anathem, so being Stephenson this means I don't really know what the story is about yet. I have some...

    New server plans?

Hardware is very cheap nowadays and you can get a very good server for half of the 7000. I played around at Dells site and, using the PowerEdge 2950 III as a base, created a server with 2x Quad Core Xeon, 16 GB RAM and two SCSI-disks in RAID1 for around 3000 USD. This would handle PHP nicely...

Aug 2008: What are you reading?

I have read exactly one page of Gibson's Neuromancer. So I can't write much about it. On the other hand, I probably don't have to as it's very famous. Before I began reading this I've read two nice stories I can recommend. First is Heinlein's "The moon is a harsh mistress". That's also a famous...

White text on black baground makes my eyes hurt

This is a problem with high-brightness, high-contrast (that is, expensive) TFT-monitors. While the brightness make these monitors very suitable for photo editing and generally displaying colors accurately, they are not very good at _not_ displaying light. The brightness from small areas can be...
