If he is immune to subdual damage and if he has regeneration from some source (which changes damage to subdual) he will be immune to damage. Gaining undead qualities someway or the other will solve your problem.

I would use helium instead of hydrogen. Being a noble gas, it is a far more stable element. It will not burn with oxygen like hydrogen does and it is lighter than air. Also if the alchemists in your campaign have found a way to create fusion reactions :O they would have an endless helium source...

Ok so I made a typo. My fighter is wielding a blade with two hands and that blade's base damage is 3d6. I don't really know if it counts as a large greatsword or huge greatsword.
