As to the guy that's a lump.... How is individual xp awards going to change the guy? Apparently he's catatonic to the game and wouldn't give a flying flip one way or the other about xp. Boot him or if its that bothersome, leave yourself. It really has nothing to do with individual rewards.

Sweet mother of god are you an elistist. Attitudes like this are the main reason Pen and Paper games are dying or stuck to a small niche. There's a lot of people out there that find these games interesting, but don't want the pressure of being forced to intensely roleplay in every session...

Bah! Individual awards breed resentment in players. You share killing xp, so you should share roleplaying xp. I do roleplaying for my enjoyment, not for competition with other players, the game is group-based anyway. The DM should look at the roleplaying from a group perspective and award...

My opinion of BlackMoria's example is that the player playing the elf was just being rude. I mean, he knew what was going to happen when he made the character, and in fact, he was even warned by the rest of the group. As a player, I don't consider party conflict very fun. I can understand...
