D&D 5E Move over Fireball and Spirit Guardians, there is a new best 3rd level spell sheriff in town!

I feel like there has to be some awesome combination where you put a spell glyph on an object and then make it into a tiny servant.

    Would you allow this?

Interesting, then I guess I do disagree with you about it. IMO "acting out of the part of a particular person or character" cannot reasonably include narrating the response of other characters as well. (Of course you could roleplay more than one character at a time, I have no problem with that...

D&D 5E Dark Gifts from the Amber Temple and being "coerced"

I would not say that flaws in general count as coercion or manipulation. How a player interprets and deals with a flaw is up to them.

    Would you allow this?

Heh, if you google the definition of role-playing, both meanings are right there: Saelorn was using definition 1 and saying that's what he prefers. But that doesn't mean definition 2 is invalid, and I don't think anyone ever meant to imply differently.

    Would you allow this?

I can see both sides of this. On the one hand, it is pretty reasonable to define role playing specifically as "playing a role" in the normal sense. Saelorn's definition is probably what a non-gamer would expect the term to mean. On the other hand, the term has broadened in meaning to encompass...

D&D 5E Using the Ethereal Plane to travel around the Material Plane

Ok, the “border ethereal” basically overlaps the material plane, so moving in it is essentially equivalent to moving in the material. The deep ethereal is separate, and getting there requires something like a portal or plane shift spell. Those are related to your material location in various...

    Would you allow this?

I think that Saelorn is trying to explain a distinction he sees, involving how much narrative control a player has. If you would prefer a different name for that distinction, suggest it. But as far as the distinction itself, it makes sense to me.

Pure Chaos - Letting players determine Ability Check DCs in Limbo

Make more sense to me to make dc’s random. Like every check is a d20 vs d20 contest against nature of the plane. Pick a fixed bonus for the plane.

    D&D 5E Levitate (enemy) vs Bink/Misty Step

“When the spell ends, the target floats gently to the ground if it is still aloft.”

    Sorcerous Origin: Illusory Power

Interesting abilities, but I don't feel like you make a very clear distinction between this and an illusionist wizard. Some particular comments: - It isn't clear which abilities are granted at what level. - Touch of Illusion: this seems hard to adjudicate to me. How do I decide if someone is...

    D&D 5E Levitate (enemy) vs Bink/Misty Step

I don't see any aspects of these spells that would invalidate each other. If you have been levitated and cast misty step, then you can teleport to a new location within 30 feet that you can see. That location could be on the ground if you aren't up too high. Afterwards you will still be under...

rule clarification: Warlock pact of chain and eldritch blast.

Just to be really clear, the issue is that the chain pact ability says "when you take the Attack action, you can forgo one of your own attacks to allow your familiar to make one attack of its own with its reaction." If you can figure out a way to cast eldritch blast as part of the attack...

    Would you allow this?

So basically, you and Hawk Diesel would simply not let the situation come up in the first place, because you would nix the player's idea for such a crippled character. That seems like a fine answer to me. I would probably allow such a character, but if the player changed their mind I'd make...

    Would you allow this?

OK yes, but let's say the player has specifically decided they want to play a flightless aarokocra, or a crippled dwarf unable to walk. Otherwise I think you are just cheating the question a bit.
  15. jaelis

    Would you allow this?

Well be careful, there's a difference between me (as DM) cutting off a dwarf characters legs, and a player deciding it would be interesting to play a legless dwarf. And of course, no one would force a player to keep using a character they were tired of. If the question was, "Would you let the...

    Would you allow this?

So then, what would you say if a character was an aarakocra whose player had decided that his wings were amputated? Would you allow them to magically regenerate in a moment of crisis?

    Would you allow this?

The OP's question hardly makes any sense though in terms of this actual ability. I think most people are assuming a situation like a winged tiefling or aarakocra, since that better matches the situation posed. But for the record yes, if you are playing a protector aasimar and have simply...

Finally found a use for Ringnmail (and other silly character design discussion)

    Would you allow this?

There is a significant difference between not having wings and choosing not to use wings that you have. In terms of your example, if a wizard chose not to record a spell he encountered into his spellbook, and then later wanted to prepare that spell as if he had, would you allow it?

D&D 5E Hang Time - What if you jump farther than your speed?

Yes, the point is that it lets jump (level 1, no concentration) give you some of the benefits of levitate (level 2, concentration) or fly (level 3, concentration). But certainly not all of the benefits. Also in an extreme case it gets a bit wonky when you are in the air for multiple rounds...
