your expereinces in flying with a small child?

I've flown with the Dude. In no particular order: - Lap belt worked just fine. Given the number of toys and books we had to occupy him, a full car-seat thing would have been a pain. - I don't remember if we hit lots of turbulence, but the kid has flown a lot, so I imagine we must have. - The...

    D&D 4E 4e and Video Games

The MMO isn't public knowledge yet, but... no. :) Be cool to see somebody implement the rules, though. Who knows -- maybe the "conversation-as-combat" system will make for more exciting (and rules-based) dialogue exchanges. I like BioWare dialogue, but it doesn't mix well with 3e conversation...

    Grim Tales question. . .

To jump in, I've had good luck altering the flavor of games by just changing the damage threshold. You drop it from Con to (Con-5), and suddenly that 2d6 damage from your average handgun is a little scary for anyone, even without bad guys with Point Blank Shot. (I tend to build bad guys...

    Grim Tales question. . .

I've run a fairly odd fantasy game (with aerocrystal fliers that used the vehicle rules for dogfighting in the skies, and flamewands that used firearms rules), as well as a one-shot modeled on DOOM -- 20th-level heroes against things I pulled out of the 3.5 SRD (demons, devils, etc). It worked...

    Player Meltdown; Input Requested

Ah. Misread you, then. As for coming up with that stuff... it's easier for me to do sitting here in front of my computer with all day to think than it must have been for you, getting blindsided by this.

    Player Meltdown; Input Requested

As a friend, you should encourage him to get some treatment. That sounds like social anxiety disorder. As a GM, you should probably gently let him out of the gaming group, with a free invite back once he's had some treatment and is feeling better about dealing with the team. Or, failing that...

    Tips for an Expectant Father

Not to be contrary, but: That's your power dynamic. That's not how it is, or should be, for everyone. Note, I say that as a dad who changes diapers. Putting these absolute "that's how it must be" statements up there isn't gonna work for all families. Unrest for whom? Right now, I sleep...

    giving away a gift....

My son uses his old figure-eight-shaped rubber teething ring as a Batman mask. (cough) Actually, we have a game, where he holds it up to his face, and I hum the Batman theme song (the Danny Elfman one). It's pretty darn cute.

    giving away a gift....

I'm not sure what context you mean in terms of "it being okay". In my (limited) experience, most people who are fairly hardnosed when it comes to regifting will still unbend for kids' gifts -- either the kid outgrows it, or the kid was just clearly not into something. It seems to get less...

    Tips for an Expectant Father

There's a part of me that, had I much more free time and better video-editing skills, would take massive pleasure in remixing some Thomas. Tonight, on a very special "Thomas the Tank Engine"... (shot of Thomas and Edward, with Thomas having the classic angry face) As unforgivable things are...

    Tips for an Expectant Father

Just to splinter off into children's television-land: http://pats-quinade.livejournal.com/61839.html I may possibly have overreacted a little to a specific Bob the Builder mini-adventure.

    Tips for an Expectant Father

Our PVR contains approximately 20 hours worth of: Mighty Machines Max & Ruby Backyardigans Pocoyo and Little Bear Our child may very well never know what it means to have a show "not be on".

    Tips for an Expectant Father

PS: My wife wanted me to add the following things after reading this thread (and she really loved whoever mentioned the "pictures with baby with stuffed animal" bit): 1) What surprised her with our recent birth was the post-partum blues. Sleep deprivation doesn't help. She was annoyed with me...

    Tips for an Expectant Father

I always heard it called "the burrito wrap" in California. It's not, really, but that's what it was called. Take a square-ish blanket, lay it down with the corners at NSWE, and fold N in a few inches. Lay the baby's head at N. Fold W over all the way, across the baby as far as it'll go, and...

    Tips for an Expectant Father

Not much to add to other people's awesome advice. Get as much face time with the baby as you can. Sure, a lot of the time. Olaf(ette) will be asleep, but in those rare times when the baby is awake, be there, talking and making eye contact. And since babies have limited vision at first, you need...

Classic video games that I'd replay

Star Control II, no question -- and you can get it for free as a legal download (Google "Ur-Quan Masters", I think -- the original developer ported it, but wasn't allowed to use the SC2 name). I will likely have to play BG2 again for work. :)

    Guitar Hero question

Not a stupid question at all. The guitars both work with both games. We've got a guitar from GH and GH2, and we've used them with both GH and GH2. You shouldn't have any trouble.

August - What are you reading?

Finished the last Harry Potter book and one of the J.D. Robb mysteries ("Survivor in Death") and am moving on to Nora Roberts' "Blue Smoke".

    Are CRPGs really role-playing games?

In NWN, a difficulty slider determines whether drinking a potion incurs an attack of opportunity or whether an ally's fireball can damage you by accident. (The Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale series had similar difficulty sliders, but I don't remember the specifics of what different difficulty...
