    D&D 5E Armor: damage reduction

I give armor a hp buffer pool of which half can be used on any attack. (AC-10)*5 for the number hps (+10 per plus) However, now reduce the base AC bonus (AC-10)/2 round up, add 10, add any magic bonus. So magic chain mail +1 is now AC=14 Hit point pool (40)

    D&D 5E Pulling your punches

When playets roll damage ask them how much if that damage do they actually want to do? If they bring a monster to -Con (or some other value of your choice) the damage is enough to kill the monster. Make sure to communicate how bad the monster looks (should anyway)... Trade off, take the risk...

    D&D 5E Weapons: Nunchuku

I'd do light club 1-handed, 1d4, using the nunchaku to stoke with 1 hand, or 2d4 2handed using them in classic perceived use, switching from hand to hand

    D&D 5E Speeding Up Combat

Don't sweat the small stuff. Don't worry about exact position, or range or any such nonsense If a monster isn't important in the scene, then a hit is as good as a kill Don't worry about book keeping Don't worry about mop up, just bring a scene to a close Make players keep attention and have...

D&D 5E Favorite method of generating ability scores

This focuses on just the bonus to the stat. Start all stats +0. Assign +6 in bonus to a max +3. Can take up to -2 total in adjustments and assign as wanted (not breaking +3 max. (Assume actual ability score the minimum required for bonus); add racial (and other) adjustments

It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like RAVENLOFT

Have to be honest, last time I ran Ravenloft it was a blast and cheesy :) Ran its as a mix between Hotel California and the Dance of the Vampires: (started in a bar that was really a Mord's Mansion that went back the Realm of Dread, rather than just an extra dimensional space .... Ran it real...

D&D 5E Settings played in D&D: cause or effect?

Well we've been told the basic math; will it sell a 100,000 copies. Gut feeling this means that it needs to be of interest to 10-15% of the base players, 30-50% of those will buy. Completely made up, but that's what I'd bet it's somewhere in there; anything below those numbers won't leave the...

D&D 5E Average damage or rolled damage?

Sorry for late reply, long day consulting. In reverse order .. Lol :) appropriate typo!! So in active story only players roll ( I think this was a rule from unearted arcana way back when)...players get 20 - critical ...get 1 ... Monster critical... In theory balances out though there is 5%...

D&D 5E Average damage or rolled damage?

Here's my take: it damage "rolled" doesn't change, only the timing of when it's communicated. So what's important is which is more dramatic - telling the damage after the attack when it's just a result, or using it to give the player the option to try and avoid it and " dodge a bullet" I agree...

D&D 5E Average damage or rolled damage?

I was responding to ... "A player doesn't get to suddenly decide that their grandpappy is a survivor of the underdark and at some point explained all that goes on down there to the PC..." I presented examples (roll and inspiration) as in game mechanical reasons that refute the above. I also...

D&D 5E Average damage or rolled damage?

How dare you get us back on topic! unsurprisingly, I have no problem using "mostly average"* but because I play an "active story" approach, where the players roll defensive checks against a static attack DC, I tell the players how much impact the attack will land ... "The skeleton appears to...
