D&D 5E 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

That's what Animal Handling is for, in a non-magical manner. But if we go down the rabbit hole of endless customization for the class features, we end up back where we started, with a number os spell slots and a thematically-appropriate spell list.

D&D 5E 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

You'd still be free to choose whichever weapon you want, and the Fighting Style you want. These would just be additional benefits. I could just say that green dragons deal poison damage, but instead I'll say that Rangers are wilderness warriors, and there are hundreds of poisonous creatures...

D&D 5E 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

Hunter's Mark is closer to Hunter's Quarry in mechanics (assign it to a single opponent), and is available to all Rangers, while only the Colossus Slayer feature offers the extra damage we've come to associate with Favored Enemy. They're both there to fill the same space, but with different...

D&D 5E 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

Hunter's Mark is there to fill up the space left from 1e/2e's bonus against giant-kind/evil humanoids, 3e's Favored Enemy, and 4e's Hunter's Quarry. It is currently a spell, but it doesn't *have* to be. Similarly, longstrider doesn't have to be a spell, it could be just a bonus to speed. And...

D&D 5E 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

One of the first 3e-era Dragon Magazines had an adaptation of the Robin Hood mythos for the newly released D&D. Curiously it had *two* Robins: the Fighter nobleman Robin of Loxley, and the Ranger commoner Robin of Sherwood.

D&D 5E 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

(I loved the Cavalier -- the Essentials Paladin -- with its focus on a Virtue; a precursor to the 5e Oaths) You mentioned the spell-less ranger: I think therein might lie the way to have the cake and eat it. Baseline class with zero spells, and with a choice of fighting/archery fighting styles...

D&D 5E [Forgotten Realms] The Wall of the Faithless

I'm not keen on the Wall of the Faithless. Not one bit.

    D&D 5E EK vs Battlemaster/Abjurer

Any reason not to go with EK/Abjurer? By level 20, you could be 12/8, meaning you'll have the spell slots of a 12th level wizard, with a good dose of class abilities from both sides.

New SCAG Info: Someone Got The Book

There several knightly orders that fit the bill. You can use the Knights of the Watch, the Knights of the Dispatch, or any of the three branches of the Knights of the Hart.

    D&D 5E SCAG MAPS

Mike (and myself) use a website called Zenfolio to handle our sales. Zenfolio offers a list of printing houses to perform the printing and shipping of photos/art you purchase from the individual artists, and we (the sellers) are restricted to whatever sizes these printing houses have available...

D&D 1E Ye Olde Ranger of Editions Past (1E-4E)

4E also had the Hunter Ranger, from the Essentials book. They were focused on bows or crossbows, and had "Aspects of the Wild" (basically totem spirits) that gave them benefits as long as they were active (these took the place of Favored Enemy/Hunter's Quarry). They also had Wilderness Knacks...

    New WotC Layoffs?

Only to a point. You'd be surprised at how much work WotC does even before outsourced studios enter the process. And the WotC art directors work throughout the process, guiding the outsourced studios and their artists.

D&D 5E The Legacy of the Fighter in 5 to 10 years

But the self-healing can also be used outside of combat, adding that to the hp recovered by spending Hit Dice.

D&D 5E The Legacy of the Fighter in 5 to 10 years

If you look at the last three editions of the game, the Fighter has increasingly gained abilties beyond "I attack, I deal damage". From 3e's "Improved X" bonus feats, to 4e's powers, to 5e's maneuvers.

D&D 5E The Names for the Psionic Class that You Like More

Psion. Rhymes with "scion". :D I'm not too keen on the "Immortal" name, though. Immortals in D&D are epic Basic characters.

D&D 5E Concentration on Psionic Discipline and Magic Spell

One Concentration "slot", period. That is the balancing mechanic to avoid "stacking effects", be they from two spells or from a spell and a discipline.

New D&D Survey: What Do you Want From Older Editions?

I'll refrain from commenting any further on this, to respect KM's request. It doesn't matter who posts anonymously. What matters is that when an accomplished professional posts on the board (under his/her true name, to boot), we ENWorlders should treat him/her with respect. As is the tradition...

New D&D Survey: What Do you Want From Older Editions?

That is certainly YOUR opinion, and you're welcome to it. Other games (including mine) had warlords that were nowhere near cartoonish in their healing capabilities -- or rather, their ability to make other *ignore the pain for a while* (plenty of real-world instances for that). As for game...
