A Simple and Effective Idea for the Fighter

Logical substitution? I don't see it. They serve entirely different purposes and have dramatically different contributions in combat. Removing Action Surge for this Initiative Advantage would make the fighter even weaker (and less interesting) than it is now. One grants an additional action...

    Obsolete Feats

Aside from headings, which are always capitalized, power is never capitalized in 4e terminology, so this feels like pointless semantics. Also, for those arguing that a "class feature power" doesn't count as a normal power should read the How to Read A Power section in the PHB. Emphasis mine...

A Simple and Effective Idea for the Fighter

I think it's a good idea to add to the fighter, not replacing anything like Ahnehnois suggests.

D&D 4E What 4E Books to Get Rid Of

Because they're useful in any edition of D&D. The DMG1 has something the DM's Kit lacks, which is essential for a DM: Monster/NPC creation rules. It was the biggest oversight of the DM's Kit.

Combat issues: slayer + at-will magic missile.

I disagree. I think an at-will spell that a character is expected to use throughout his entire career should scale in some way to keep it somewhat interesting.

Hit points & long rests: please consider?

So, your argument is that turning a sword thrust to the chest into a graze is not an example of turning a serious blow into a less serious blow.
  8. The Little Raven

Hit points & long rests: please consider?

Nothing contradicts. Hit points are an abstract representation of the combination (A) your ability to withstand physical damage, (B) the skill involved in avoiding serious physical damage, (C) protection from supernatural sources, and (D) luck. He then clarifies, several times, that withstanding...

    Wizards: Already Too Strong?

I don't mind a scaling auto-hit magic missile, so long as it scales slower or with lower bonuses in order to keep it on the power curve.

    D&D 5E D&D Next Playtest Readthrough: Eh, It’s OK

While you and I are basically diametrically opposed in terms of what we want, and what we don't like, I absolutely want you to have equal input into the process. WotC ran their mouths about how this game could basically bring you and I to the same table, and it's their job to reconcile our...

Hit points & long rests: please consider?

I noticed that you cut out the sentence right after that one, which further clarifies the relationship between Constitution and ability to take physical damage. According to this taken as a whole, Constitution is partially ability to withstand physical damage (physique) and partially...
  12. The Little Raven

Hit points & long rests: please consider?

The 1e example you quoted fits the exact definition for 3.5 Hit Points. Substitute the words "sword thrust to the heart" for the words "serious blow" (since I'm pretty sure getting stabbed in the heart is a serious blow) and the words "less serious blow" for the words "graze" (getting graze by a...

    The Playtest Fighter

Now, the question is whether a class that is improvisation-heavy is an advanced or beginner class? The conventional wisdom states that the Fighter is the beginner class for new players and the Magic-User (or other spellcaster) is the advanced class for advanced players. However, this doesn't...

Hit points & long rests: please consider?

Gary was very explicit in the many passages I quoted that hit points were far more "other things" than physical damage. And Gary also suggests that if the DM is going to track hit points to keep things secret from the players, it be described in terms of fatigue. Note that he doesn't recommend...

    D&D 5E D&D Next Playtest Readthrough: Eh, It’s OK

So, what, we should all just keep our ignorant mouths shut until the final product comes out and then have an opinion, thereby negating the entire reason to have this playtest in the first place (which is to get our feedback on the unfinished product)?
  16. The Little Raven

Combat issues: slayer + at-will magic missile.

Some people's definition of compromise is "Those other idiots drop their nonsensical beliefs and agree with me completely." Those are exactly the kind of people that WotC should not be listening to.
  17. The Little Raven

    The Playtest Fighter

By this argument ("More tools on the character sheet reduces player improvisation"), spellcasting classes reduce the ability of a player to improvise, since they're often composed solely of "tools on their sheets."

Please take the whole "Hit Points and Regaining Hit points" back to the drawing board

You are claiming that the physical/metaphysical distribution of hit points was 50/50. Thus a character with 95 hit points has 47/48 physical hit points, according to you. Gary's explanation of the breakdown of the amount of hit points that would be physical directly contradicts that claim...

Please take the whole "Hit Points and Regaining Hit points" back to the drawing board

Oops, referred to a quote from the book without actually putting in the post. Sorry. This is immediately after he breaks down that the maximum number of "physical hit points" a character would have is 23.
  20. The Little Raven

Please take the whole "Hit Points and Regaining Hit points" back to the drawing board

So, what made it look 50/50 was reading one vague description and ignoring the rest of his statements, which went into far more detail? Not a convincing argument.
