Need critique for my combat system

Hmmmmmmmm You could do C&S (Chivalry & Sorcery)..... Seriously, if you want a distribution of points per location based on total, check out Runequest (at least in its earlier iterations, such as 2nd Edition). Some good ideas.

    Frenzied Bezerker BBEG TPK

Deus Ex Machina Of course, your friend requesting your creation of the final encounter BBEG intended to start a Ghostwalk campaign all along ! :) How wonderfully it worked out, no ? ;)

    Has D&D become too...D&Dish?

It's a Game, with Real Life Parallels Either people (NPCs) decide to move forward as entrepreneurs, and have done so for some time, or they do the previosu for a short spell, or they have remained steeped in minimalist views. Such choices within the campaign may be cultural and thus...

    Exalted Pickle

Moral Dilemma ???? NOT ! Unless you have firmly established either the history / knowledge or precedent that some typically evil creatures within yoru campaign CAN be good, or at least neutral-ish, the proper frame of reference for the characters is "Troll, even enslaved, and then freed =...

    Massive Damage Varient

Strangely Enough... The 3E orc with greataxe could crit up to a max of 42 hp damage... That was pretty close to the 50 hp threshold. Of course, odds for that damage total are LOW : 5% X % chance to hit (always relates to AC) X 8.5% (12 on a d12).... You don;t see it everyday ! :-)

What is the most overlooked rule in dnd?

So ? From SRD "Arcane spellcasters face the possibility of arcane spell failure if they’re wearing armor" Not DIVINE spellcasters, Arcane !

    Why does Mars always rebel?

Mars.... I Reapeat... Mars... "Mars was the Roman god of war, the son of Juno and either Jupiter or a magical flower. As the word Mars has no Indo-European derivation, it is most likely the Latinized form of the agricultural Etruscan god Maris. Initially the Roman god of fertility and...

    Capping Ability Scores

Different Game Never ceases to amaze me that so many DMs fail to grasp the huge power gap between older editions and current 3.5. Successful Third edition campaigns are not possible nor well suited for control freak DMs. There is a case to impose limits, or at least make it more difficult for...

    What is cheating?

False Assumptions The premisce is often skewed: players are NOT their characters. As a matter of fact, unless a player operates at genius level, most RPGers would need a crew of writers to perform and speak as their 18 Cha Bard, or fire off history and the like as their 18 or 20 or 22 Int Wiz...

    PHBII: Retraining?

Swap Anything Having ogres as favored enemy really sucks when the campaign evolves towards a coastal underwater affair... We progress slowly in one of my campaigns. We started playing (again) when 3e was young, and fewer options or extraneous material was around. Reconsidering has been applied...

    Orcs vs. Commoner Humans

Orc tribes are a WARRING Faction And the smiths spend many nights hammering away at crafting decent weapons. All peasants NOT formerly with the nation's army or local militia are likely to be armed with a dagger, or possibly with home-crafted short bow and wobbly arrows. We therefore announce...

What do you want from a campaign setting?

A Few Clues... While we always want anything original, fresh, or extentive / complete, here are a few NOTs, as in DO NOT (imho)... - recreate a European medieval setting (no one has done a fantasy-evolved setting as yet, because it's hard work... No more ships, no more caravans, etc...) -...

    Treasure Discussion: AD&D1, D&D3

AD&D 1E (and 2E to some extent).... Yes, but the main question becomes "Do the magic-users have Sleep as a spell?" :)

    Treasure Discussion: AD&D1, D&D3

Afterthought, Speaker in Dreams I was a player in my (short lived) co-DM campaign... The other DM's idea was low-magic, stripped down adventurers, struggle to survive (as opposed to heroic struggle against forces of darkness)... For Speaker, we got maybe 10% of treasure and moneys floating...

    Treasure Discussion: AD&D1, D&D3

Duration Also consider the length of actual playtime involved in each module / adventure.... Commercial adventures should actually state a rough estimate of hours devoted to completion. The wholesale giant slaughter of G1-G3 in 1e did NOT amount to many levels for the characters involved.

    Treasure Discussion: AD&D1, D&D3

????? Your men-at-arms are cannon fodder? Or you live alone, far from any city or town, right? I never saw any valuable go to waste in 1E. Sure, you can, as DM, ensure that most of the loot will stay behind or smehow get lost, stolen, removed: it was never difficult to create situations to...

    Treasure Discussion: AD&D1, D&D3

Campaign Issues, Progression & Treasure We started playing back in '77 or '78 (our late teens, with the limited tools initially available back then) in a "nameless" soon to be Greyhawk or Grey-hacked (GH mixed in with various borrowed items) environment. The initial premise in 1E was that your...

Big Dungeons - An unrequited love?

Xxl Dungeon Management... Dwarves build underground cities. Humans even build mountain flank, cave recessed towns withotu any of the dwarven traits (see Google, Images, Cappadocia .... which is in Turkey and had supplied so many neat pix for my campaign). There must be a sensible travel...

    D&D vs. WoW

Shared Experience... You can, to a limited degree, bring the MMO to the table top.. The LAN party has people with laptops (or for the really undaunted, you can use tabletop PCs... Requires way more patience to set up) around the same table, hub-linked and playing an MMO. A really BIG LAN...
