D&D 4E Crafting... can anyone make anything in 4E?

How was 3E, 2E or 1E any different in this? I'll grant that 3E pretended to have more, but all the things it had that 4E doesn't have were bad rules, as best I recollect. Crafting, in particular, was a horrible system. Better to have no rules than bad rules, I think. I'll grant that there...

D&D 4E Crafting... can anyone make anything in 4E?

They crafting rules were crap in official supplements at the very least. I am not sure about all 3rd party stuff, however. It's better to not have a rule than to have a crappy rule. The bread and butter of the D&D rules has always been combat. Generally the rules elsewhere have been...

    Shouldn't most Rituals be free?

Well, first I am not saying ALL rituals should be free, in case you are under that impression. (No offense if you aren't, but I seem to be plagued by people who think that). Beyond that, mind sharing your reasoning on why many of the rituals in the PHB shouldn't be free? Well, rituals should...

    Shouldn't most Rituals be free?

That's because the game doesn't work like that (which is overall a very good thing). In fact it encourages the DM to give the PCs a success if they have plenty of time to work on a skill-related thing. So the basic effect of taking 20 is still there.

Only thing I don't like so far: Power Replacement

Yeah, the rules say that it disappears.

D&D 4E Crafting... can anyone make anything in 4E?

Well then, what were you using before 4E? Edit: Hmm, you aren't the OP, and looking over this thread it almost seems like you are trolling. Certainly you aren't helping the OP (who has seemed to appreciate what has been said by others overall). Well, I'll ponder this after I get some sleep.

    Creature Incarnations - Kobolds!

I did something like that once and the players found said Kobold huddled behind a latrine. They ended up 'adopting' him (I fudged a backstory on the spot about how he had always been abused and mistreated). His name was Squeeg. He wasn't very effective in combat or anywhere else, but he...

    Shouldn't most Rituals be free?

Here's the partial list I made on the WotC forums: Animal Messenger Arcane Lock Comprehend Language Cure Disease Detect Object Detect Secret Doors Disenchant Magical Item Drawmij's Instant Summons Endure Elements Eye of Alarm Ritual Repose Hallucinatory Item Knock Leomund's Secret Chest Magic...

    why are orbs good again?

Well, I've only read some people looking things over, and it seems Wizards (and Warlocks) have problems because other classes have access to more things that increase to-hit values. It's a bit easier for them as they gain levels. I've read a few cases where people have looked at this and...

    why are orbs good again?

Best to retrain for Orb at 30 then. If that's the case.

    why are orbs good again?

I haven't looked, but how good is immobilization against Solos? I know a lot of them for which it wouldn't be all that great. Personally, I think that Immobilization is generally better against crowds.

    why are orbs good again?

Sadly, only at-wills can be extended an extra round. So that's only Ray of Frost and Cloud of Daggers. It's mega-lame and disappointing, imho. If it worked with ANY wizard spell that had a duration, then I'd be all over Orbs. They'd really be awesome for control then. (I misread it the same...

    why are orbs good again?

Ahh, ok, there is one then, whose effect is ongoing damage (just 5), but no status effect. It also is very close range. Overall it doesn't seem like a very good control spell to me. That said, I guess I missed the one exception on "save ends" spells. I'd argue that the Wand is better for...

    why are orbs good again?

Unfortunately, there are no encounter spells with "save ends", so you are stuck with using Dailies for the Orb. In fact, the Orb can't ever do anything with encounter spells or Dailies that don't have "save ends", which is bad on a lot of levels. The Wall spells, for instance, are great but...

    Ritual Costs and spell components

Huh, I don't know how I misread that.

    Ritual Costs and spell components

By the rules, he has to buy specific components for that ritual (and they are not useful for other rituals). Well, unless he gets risidium (however you spell that) which can be used with any ritual (I'm a little unclear how the market price for that). As a DM (assuming I had the ritual cost...

    Shouldn't most Rituals be free?

The level of a Ritual ensures it can't be used below a certain level. A 4th level ritual can't be learned before 4th level, for instance. I like 2&3. #1 looks like overkill for me for most rituals (like Tenser's Floating Disk or Animal Messenger). I'd personally try it without that first...

    Shouldn't most Rituals be free?

Again though, the vast majority of the rituals are fine just being FREE. You could make those free and keep the cost on the others. That doesn't change the system at all. I think we all agree that it is ok if class features give you things/abilities that would normally cost money. In any...

    Shouldn't most Rituals be free?

I have already said I find such divinations to be an exception. If you still wanted something like that free then you'd have to place some other restriction (such as only allowing them to be cast once per month). If the PCs can spend days inching through a dungeon and suffer no consequences...
