    Saga skills?

Can someone explain to me how saga skills work and how that's likely to translate to 4e? I don't have Saga, and don't really want to buy it just to get a 4e preview.

    Multiclass math

I would love this as well. This is currently one of the major deficiencies of multiclassing (right behind spellcasting). We do fractional BAB in some of our campaigns, so multiclassing two 3/4 classes doesn't totally screw you and it works out really well. But, like others have said, they're...

One Level Scale to Rule Them All?

I think I would actually much rather have more spells of different levels than greater, lesser, major, minor, and supreme super deluxe double plus good versions of the same spells. Just smacks of lack of creativity to me. Does anyone really LIKE the fact that there's 9 summon monster spells...

    speculation - derived XP chart

Yeah, keep in mind, you have to be able to have divisions among the levels... XP awards aren't handed out by the level-ful, otherwise we wouldn't need XP at all. You could probably drop one zero off eveything and be fine, but D&D has a legacy of high XP totals than pretty much any other game...

    speculation - derived XP chart

Exactly what I was going to say. In 2nd edition, everyone had their own XP chart, and only one or two (if I remember correctly) started at 1000. There's no reason to believe that the XP chart in 4e will be at all similar to 3e. The XP chart in 3e was very pretty and easy for PCs to...

    speculation - derived XP chart

I'm kind of assuming that most monsters at the same level will be worth the same XP..... or at least within a range of XPs. I mean, what does level of a monster mean if it's not related to how hard it is to kill? And if it's harder to kill, it should be worth more XP, right? I don't think...

    speculation - derived XP chart

Yeah, exactly. Which means astronomical XP totals at higher levels.... not that there's anything wrong with that. -Nate

    speculation - derived XP chart

So, ignore the 8000xp for a level 8 party, I don't think that can really work out. The very fact that we no longer have the CR chart means that XP/difficulty has to be built into the XP chart. So that you always get the same XP for the same difficulty. Thus, for example, assume 5 1st level...

    speculation - derived XP chart

<edit> This post references the previous XP chart that I put up there, which I've now replaced with the one that seems more likely to be accurate to me </edit> So, using this system, it sounds like a typical monster will be worth monster level * 200. For 10th level that means 2000xp. Of...

    speculation - derived XP chart

One of the things mentioned was how the XP system will work. There's no more CR system, instead monsters will have levels and a set XP value. I think this is very interesting, it's pretty much like 2nd edition and before, where the complexity of the XP system is integrated into the XP chart...

One Level Scale to Rule Them All?

I don't think that could work.... when you first get "trained" your power level would jump enormously. They're trying to make the power levels scale more gradually, so I don' think it'll be like this. I think one spell level per caster level is the way it'll go. It's much more simple and...

    Warlord

I said this in another post - I bet this is a PrC not a base class. A 1st level warlord doesn't make any sense to me. Maybe if that's just a placeholder name.... I definitely think the game could use a charismatic leader type class, but please, WoTC, don't call it a warlord. -Nate

D&D 4E Directly from a quote- 8 classes in 4e! (well, now subject to much debate)

You're already wrong here. That's specifically been discussed in this thread. His comment was in the context of that specific playtest group only. The only hard data we have is that there will be fewer base classes in the core book than there are now. The only things which are really up in...

    How I'd re-work armour in 4th Edition D&D

I highly doubt they'll do Armor-As-DR. There's a number of good reasons to use Armor as AC, and the number one is simplicity. You're always going to have to roll to hit no matter what, so making Armor affect that number means you only have to do one calculation, rather than two. Also, being...

    Rodney Thompson on Magic Items

I think it would be fantastic if the generic +x to y items went away.... for stats and saves it's easy to drop them. I'd like to see the same to be done with the multiply stacking AC bonuses as well. You shouldn't need fullplate +5 and a ring of protection +5 and amulet of natural armor +5 to...

    D&D 3E/3.5 The design processes from 2e to 3e, 3 to 3.5, and 3e to 4e.

Great post. I think you have it 100% right. In addition to making 4e more fun to play I think they're also trying to make the game more balanced across the levels... the big things being more gradual and smooth gains in power, more viability of low level characters, and less difference between...

D&D 4E 4E: What we think we know

D&D 3E/3.5 3.5 is the REAL reason everyone is angry

I have the utmost respect for people's love of the game, please don't get me wrong. I love the game as much as anyone... from when I was 12 and first opened second hand books, to now when I have bookshelves full of D&D books I bought with my own money. I think it's great that D&D is so loved...

D&D 3E/3.5 3.5 is the REAL reason everyone is angry

To everyone complaining about the 4e announcement: It's not about you. If you don't want/can't afford to buy 4e books.... for god's sake, don't buy them. But don't act like WoTC has some moral obligation to ask your personal opinion about their business strategy. No one's putting a gun to...

"Some" traditional classes to get the axe - Which ones do you reckon?

One thing I just thought of.. talent trees only work if you get something every level. We already know from the fighter that if you don't get something every level, your class sucks. And I don't mean that as hyperbole. Look at all the "good" classes. You get something every level, even if...
