So, what, exactly, is a turn?

Yes, if you roll one initiative check for a bunch of goblins and send them all walking past the same PC on their turn, that PC gets an opportunity attack against each of them because they each get an individual turn. Rolling initiative for a group is just a shortcut that DMs are advised to use.

    Favorite/Hated Race - and Why?

Putting one in for the genasi. Elemental humans are just cool! I don't have a least favorite. I'm one of those "everything exists in my world" DMs, because I'm so easy to please. They haven't published anything I find shouldn't be included yet. I also agree that elves shouldn't get all...

    Battles & Badges

Of course, I'd love if anybody wanted to help out and design some Pokemon. A few guidelines I suppose would be: 1) Use the format I've been using, it's easy to read and understand. It's perfectly fine to include next to none or even no flavor; we're focusing on the mechanics because the...

    Heroes of Unlikely Places (Hopefully?)

While I don't need Wizards to make my crunch for me, I would eat up (figuratively) a book that finally had the monster races. I don't have the resources they have to playtest things, and I like balanced games. Let me be another to say that I really wish they would make a mosnter-as-PC book.

    Battles & Badges

Check out Charmander. They're pretty much hexblades in disguise, but it fit so perfectly that I couldn't say no.

    Essentials Bard: the Balladeer

That's a brilliant idea! You need to add a class feature to allow the bard to use his or her implement for weapon attacks, so it doesn't require a magic weapon and a magic implement to be effective. I know this is not complete, but as it's being fleshed out, stick in more 1st level features...

Oh, that's a cool idea...XP to you in spirit.

    Why the renaming of classes?

I still think of the original class names as the "main" ones. A character is a fighter (slayer) in my mind, not a slayer (fighter).

D&D Still Satanic? "So my mom threw away all my D&D books..."

That goes with my third point. Keep in mind that she doesn't have to believe they exist to believe it to be a problem. Even if she is completely nonreligious, it is reasonable to believe that when a person believes in shadow magic and starts worshiping weird pretend gods, they will turn to...

    Why the renaming of classes?

Delericho said it best. They have invented a subclass system, where the original classes were each one subclass of their overall class. So, why would the original fighters be called only fighters while Essentials has two more classes: fighter (knight) and fighter (slayer). Though I don't agree...

D&D Still Satanic? "So my mom threw away all my D&D books..."

I meant that it could be read that way if you 1) have no idea what D&D is, and maybe remember some stuff about it being satanic in the 80s, 2) are inclined to believe that children are weak-minded enough to turn to shadow worship, and 3) believe that worshipping Satan or 'the Shadowfell' is an...

    Heroes of the Feywild Speculation

Thread for general speculation, hopes, some discussion, but no arguments! I think the most certain thing we'll see is a druid build, probably a controller and probably a shapeshifter, but built differently than the original one, Essentials-style. We might see some other primal classes getting...

D&D Still Satanic? "So my mom threw away all my D&D books..."

Looking at the book, I can see how a misunderstanding might occur in a set-minded mom. "Okay, 'Heroes of Shadow.' Let's see what this is about. Table of Contents, blah-de-blah, too small for my weak eyes, let's turn the page...Oh, what a nice picture. And the title...Into the Dark...

    Battles & Badges

A while ago, I started a project to make a Pokemon TTRPG using the D&D 4e rules. I had quite some help from the folks on this board, and now that I've started back up, I thought I'd put it here to see who's interested. Battles_&_Badges is completely seperate from D&D 4e, besides almost...

    My Brilliant Homebrew

It's cool to see some homebrewed monsters. They're what I find hard to homebrew, so kudos and I'll be sticking around!

    Cleric (Templar) is Up

Ha, I didn't think of it that way. You know, thinking back on it, it's really dependent on the character and how he or she uses the class features. Clerics and paladins both can be stay-at-home or outgoing, and they might even have the same goals, but their methods are still very different...

    Rule of Three: 05/16/2011

I think that they'll certainly make a werebeast class at some point, but I don't know why everyone speculated that it would be in Heroes of the Feywild. What does lycanthropy (or therianthropy) have to do with the Feywild?

    Cleric (Templar) is Up

I'd say that a templar would generally fight when the enemy invades the templar's home, whereas a paladin will go looking for the enemy to stop them before they get anywhere. I see paladins as much more warrior-like, wanting to quell a threat before it grows, whereas a templar, even one from a...

    Reverse Expectations

I had a thought. Since the dawn of roleplaying games, there have been levels. Many games today try to kill this sacred cow. However, there is one thing that you cannot (and many would say should not) get rid of; while playing, your character gets stronger. What if this were relatively not...
