WotC What anime franchises could be adapted into D&D?

I want to say Berserk, but it'd translate poorly to an RPG. The setting is great, if a bit predictable at first. It's monster devoid then suddenly monster diverse. But the big kicker is of course the content is far too violent and disturbing, and you would have to include that for an honest...

D&D 5E Player agency and Paladin oath.

Wait a sec... What exactly is the problem with letting prisoners go? They might come back with buddies to fight you again? Extra XP! And you get to pick the spot to ambush them - and then track to their lair where their loot is stashed. Heck maybe just track them and ambush them at their...

D&D 5E Player agency and Paladin oath.

I'm upfront about the stick. Some DM's promise unfettered freedom -> abuse of freedom -> game collapses. Effectively there was a stick but the DM neither showed nor used it. So everyone got whacked with it, as they deserved. [Edit] Also, characters agonizing over disagreements and trying to...

D&D 5E Player agency and Paladin oath.

Okay, you don't want to ditch the group. Well... don't allow reviving defeated monsters. The dying rule is specifically for PCs and important NPCs. Force the players to use Speak with Dead instead. For my own games I don't allow excessive inter-party conflict. If one PC does something that...

D&D 5E Player agency and Paladin oath.

Wait, you really don't like paladins... and then agreed to DM a game with one in it? Why do that to yourself? You should have made this clear to the players from the start. A game is way waaay better if the DM likes the characters the players have made. I think your players are also at fault...

D&D General Why can Giant Eagles, Giant Elk, and Giant Owls speak?

They create an incentive for Rangers and Druids to learn these languages. One PC Ranger is learning G. Eagle and a PC Druid knows G. Owl. Oh, an Ancients Paladin has Elk heraldry, something might develop there. Helps a bit with Conjure Animals without needing Speak with Animals, but really...

D&D 5E 5e Surprise and Hiding Rules Interpretation

How do you handle hiding in plain sight? Like secreting a dagger on your person and springing an assassination attempt in an everyday setting.

WotC Older D&D Books on DMs Guild Now Have A Disclaimer

I don't get this at all. If WotC don't approve of previous content, they should pull it and market new stuff they are proud of.

D&D 5E Is the Poison Spray Cantrip any good?

Well I guess we need to run some numbers to see the state of things regarding EKs and Poison Spray. Poison Spray is a Con save, so we can assume the EK is using it against a higher AC foe they’ve fought before with a known modest Con save: the Veteran springs to mind, AC17 and Con+2. I don’t...

D&D 5E Is the Poison Spray Cantrip any good?

War magic and Eldritch strike make it feasible for an Eldritch Knight. R1 throw yourself into the enemy's midst, cast Blade ward then strike to impose save disadvantage. R2 Poison spray for 2d12 then strike to reimpose disadvantage. Not amazingly impressive, but expends no limited...

D&D General The child stealing food to survive scenario, for alignment

Well ranged attacks can't be nonlethal RAW, which makes a lot of sense. You can't suddenly pull the momentum necessary for accurate aim. But don't get hung up on this, the DM said you could, so I presume it was a gentle enough ankle tap with the sweep of the hammer's handle.

D&D General The child stealing food to survive scenario, for alignment

I would presume that if you confronted an actual starving child, they'd stop, or perhaps try to run, though not in a thought out manner - and would likely be unsuccessful versus an adult pursuer. A grab might be needed initially, but just as likely not. If on the other hand they fled with...

D&D General The child stealing food to survive scenario, for alignment

Personally I think it depends more on the character than the alignment directly. Here's a couple of LG characters, let's see. Lorallen, fairly typical human LG paladin of captain rank. - Catching the urchin, he'd want to know details. Assuming poverty the reason and not organized crime, he'd...

    D&D 5E Is 5e "Easy Mode?"

Numbers alone don't predicate the PCs winning ways, a lot of that comes down to the DM preparing digestible encounters. Don't do that and things become unpredictable. Back to my sea battle example, a warship has 70-80 warriors, so that's what it has. Party consideration has left the building...

    D&D 5E Is 5e "Easy Mode?"

I agree 5E might be easy in that your character is hard to kill, but 5E still leaves plenty of ways to fail. The heroes in my current game are in a 30 man longship and have captured a similar sized longship. Instant 10k gp + loot onboard. An 80 man warship is searching for them, and it...

    D&D 5E Wish: additional 9th level slot

I could see this situation happening. The party is desperate, absolutely no time to waste, need to True Resurrect 2 legendary heroes, must be them, Cleric has one 9th level slot. Wizard says 'to heck with it - I Wish the cleric could cast True Rez twice today.' Cleric gets 2 x 9th level slots...

    D&D 5E Wish: additional 9th level slot

2 x ninth level slots isn't unbalancing, just do it the honest way. Get to 20th level and earn another 30k xp for your first Epic boon. Done.

    D&D 5E Wish: additional 9th level slot

That power boost is a 9th level slot. Ninth level. Look at the wizard capstone. Look at what the player is trying to grab. Ho ho, no, it does not benefit the party at all. It's one player attempting to lord it. And if allowed, the other players would want power boosts too causing all manner of...

D&D 5E Control water and sea battles

They're just looking at the vessel draft and saying 'it fits the huge dimension on the grid' and ruling based on that. Mind you UA is not RAW. In fact RAW is silent in this matter. Yeah, I don't buy it. I guess I'm settled on ruling the Galley and Warship are gargantuan. Sailing ship and...

    D&D 5E Wish: additional 9th level slot

This kind of wish is a naked power grab by one player, at the expense of the other players who'd be over-shadowed by such a spell caster. I'd take a dim view at such player behavior. No ruling would be necessary.
