D&D 4E In D&D 4e, is there any ability by Enemies that will silence a caster?

Please don't do this. You will make your PC weep.

XP - How do you do it?

For a previous 4E, more RP-based game, I had a very simple system: We play once a week, for 4 hours each session. Every 3 weeks, everyone levels up. I'm planning on running the KotS AP, and will probably go with the by-the-book method.

    No Character Builder Update

Just want to echo this. Especially for creating new characters, things like the changes to racial ability scores are important. Still deciding if I just want to tell people about the changes or delay starting my KotS campaign a month.

    No Character Builder Update

Yes, people have a notion that they are entitled to get what they paid for. How ludicrous.

    No Character Builder Update

The 21st of September, yes? And it will include, most notably for my purposes, the ability score changes from Essentials?

D&D 4E Playing 4E without miniatures and the battle grid.

I would not play D&D without a battle map, and here's why: D&D is not a roleplaying game. It is a fantasy tactical boardgame with RPG-game style mechanics, based on small squad combat. This is why 300 page rulebooks have only 30 pages of fluff. The roleplaying part is what you add to it.

If players don't GM, can they complain?

The thing is, it's usually a lot easier to find a cook willing to cook you a meal who has an opening at their dinner table, than...you get the analogy. I think it comes down to supply and demand. I have the luxury of running the game I want, because I can find enough players who are interested...

Finding Traps Stinks - Or Am I Doing It Wrong?

Not sure if it's what you're looking for, but here's an idea: Passive checks are always opposed by an active check. So in the example of a trap, it doesn't have a Perception DC of 19, it has a +9 Stealth modifier. When you read a premade adventure or trap, that's pretty much what it means...

I'd like to start at 1st level, since at least some of my party will be new.

    Best Adventure Path?

Going from levels 1-30 would be ideal, but shorter would be fine. I'd just like to have something premade where the PCs can go where they want and it'll be ready, whether it's rooms in a dungeon or events in a storyline. Having read through the first few SoW adventures, I've found that a lot...

    Best Adventure Path?

Hi there folks, The D&D bug is getting to me once again, and once again, it means I'll have to DM if I want a game. Something I've noticed with my games is that they're best when I'm running a premade adventure; when I'm improvising and building towards my overarching plotline, they get linear...

Always wrong with math and minis

I just use placeholder tokens, myself. Each one has a letter and a number on it. Make 45 tokens: 9 tokens for each letter A to E, each numbered 1 to 9. Each letter represents a creature type (read: statblock), and each number is another individual of that type. Example: 1 goblin hexer = A1 4...

DND Essentials: The Shelly Mazzanoble Edition

Anyone remember that ridiculously OP warlock bear familiar she had in one of her Dragon articles a while back? Came within an inch of causing major headaches for the RPGA. The decision ended up being that since the statblock lacked the familiar keyword, it could not actually be chosen as a familiar.

How Essentials and beyond are Bacon

Here's the trouble with bacon: I'm inviting my friends over to have breakfast once a week. The first week, they have to decide what they're eating every week after that. If the choices are real bacon or powdered eggs, everyone will choose the bacon.

Can I sustain a power without line of sight to its effect?

The situation: A wizard has used Rolling Thunder: Rolling Thunder - Wizard Attack 1 Standard Action Ranged 10 Target: One or two creatures. Attack: Intelligence vs. Reflex Hit: 3d6 + Intelligence modifier thunder damage, and you slide the primary target 3 squares. Miss: Half damage, and you...

Help me make WotC adventures better.

I like combat encounters to be fleshed out in a page or two, with everything present (encounter map, terrain, monster statblocks, tactics). This is part of why I like the Delve format; it actually gets this done. Encounter maps need to be designed in a way that allows for easy map setup in...
