D&D 5E Report and advice after our first session in Ghosts of Saltmarsh

I've run this back in the day as well as recently (just before GoS was announced), and I find the house still works fairly well. There are a lot of empty rooms but, as other posters mentioned, it only makes sense given the nature of the adventure setting and the house can be cleared fairly...

Short Adventure with Big Battle as Background

Dungeon Magazine #221 has "The Battle of Emridy Meadows" by Chris Perkins and Jon Leitheusser. I believe it was published for 5e during the playtest. It involves the final battle between the forces of the Temple of Elemental Evil and the forces of good, where IIRC the PCs are given missions to...

    D&D 5E Best 5e high level adventure?

There are some pretty good ones in QoD. "Ra's Evil Grin" and "Sewers of the Underguild" are excellent and gauged for 11th and 15th level respectively. "Emeralds of Highfang" is recommended for "high level" - I'd estimate 16th-18th level. Bear in mind that modules from Frog God Games are usually...

    Scenario with a Dragon's Lair?

Fires of Iskh from the Arcane Library is an excellent one-shot adventure into a red dragon's lair. We played this a year ago and I highly recommend it. Roll up some 20th level characters and have a blast (pun intended). There's another ancient red dragon lair called "Emeralds of Highfang" by...

What's your opinion on "Save or Die" effects?

Good point. AFAIK, there aren't (technically) any save or die effects in the 5e core rules. The closest things are attacks that bring a character's hit points to zero (a banshee's wail, a bodak's gaze, a demilich's howl, etc.) Similar forms of attack like a wraith's life drain ability might also...

What's your opinion on "Save or Die" effects?

I have absolutely no problem with save-or-die provided I've done my part to provide enough clues/warnings/foreshadow to the players so they can make an informed decision on their own. In other words, I wouldn't just spring it on them out of nowhere. It takes a lot of time and brain-wracking to...

Grogbards, Tell Me Stories of Greyhawk

Actually, Brazzemal was named in the original G3 module, not the 5e update, so I guess he could be considered the first named dragon of the setting (at least by Gygax). Brazzemal also made an appearance in the Age of Worms adventure path from Paizo which added quite a few more named dragons to...

Looking for a well-written high-level (10-20) campaign setting in the Underdark from any edition of D&D.

Having just run these modules for my 5e group, I'll second this suggestion. Written by the man who invented the underdark and drow, these modules have never been equaled. To expand on D1-2 Descent Into the Depths of the Earth, check out Encyclopedia Subterranica it's a community fan-made project...

Facing demon lords at full strength

Something like that. Maybe a magical device or creature(s) that empower her magic immunity like a battery. The PCs have to choose to destroy the device/creature(s) to reduce it or focus their attack on Lolth, much like a videogame boss.

Facing demon lords at full strength

Yeah, especially when you consider her Summon Demons legendary action (which I like a lot). At-will planar ally is a little overkill and would make things both hopeless and tedious. Not a tactic I'd want to resort to. With regards to her limited magic immunity, its a tough call with this...

Facing demon lords at full strength

Right, thanks for reminding me about that! I bought that article from DMs Guild a few months ago, it's very good. I actually prefer that version of Lolth over the one I posted - she has some more interesting attack options and has both cleric and wizard spellcasting abilities (as per her AD&D...

Facing demon lords at full strength

I haven't run a 5e demon lord against my group yet, but they're currently in Vault of the Drow with plans to move onto Q1 after, so a confrontation with Lolth is inevitable. They will be around 18th-20th level by then, so I'll likely use this version of Lolth or a tweaked variation of it. In my...

Good high level (10+) swords and sorcery themed adventures?

I'd suggest The Forgotten Temple of Tharizdun, particularly the Undertemple/Cyst portion of the module. It's got that weird, pulp fantasy vibe. You could use the upper Temple as well, tho I'd be inclined to make the norkers more like ape-men to keep with the Howardesque s&s aesthetic.

    Highest level spell combos

CapnZapp: that's a solid game plan you have 👍 Since much of Acererak's set up is dependent on the time stop, what spells have priority if, say, he only gets two rounds with it instead of the full five? Just curious. With regards to the reverse gravity/prismatic wall (sphere)//lava combo...

    Highest level spell combos

I love this idea. I'd expand it to include necromancy touch spells like bestow curse and vampiric touch. I imagine with each use a spectral apparition emerges from the phylactery to deliver the touch spell, if nothing else it is thematic and might encourage PCs to attack the phylacteries...

    Highest level spell combos

Pair this with Quickleaf's suggestion of the time stop/wall of force combo and this is vicious. Or to make it even more insidious (if you don't mind changing one of Acererak's 7th level spells), use forcecage (cube version) instead of wall of force with time stop. Less room to run and little...

    Highest level spell combos

While I agree with lowkey's pov, the unpopular opinion sometimes makes for an unfun encounter 😕 Still, Acererak is supremely smart so I'd definitely load up on some precautions. Maybe a symbol of hopelessness triggered when he arrrives? Or some dust of sneezing and choking traps (it won't...

Monsters that punch above their CR

In my experience, ropers are horrendous things to fight at any level. A calculated "Easy" or "Medium" encounter with ropers is never that. High AC, reach, and plenty of attacks make these guys extremely dangerous and hard to put down. With a bite that inflicts 4d8+4 damage, god help anyone who...

Treasures of the Underdark - 40 Magic Items

I saw this post the other day and immediately bought it for my Vault of the Drow game. Its exactly what I was looking for - cool new magic items suited for an Underdark campaign. The items are fairly creative and fun (fungal rations is one of my favourites), although there are a few...

    Looking for: Red Dragon Lair

There are two very good ancient red dragon lairs for 5e that I know of: Emeralds of High Fang (by Ed Greenwood) appears in Quests of Doom Vol. 1, published by Frog God Games. Then there is Fires of Iskh at the Arcane Library, which I highly recommend. I recently ran this for my players and it...
