D&D 5E What Makes a Good Urban Adventure?

The urban adventure is the antithesis of the dungeon crawl. Where a dungeon may offer two or three different paths, the city offers near limitless routes for the PCs. Both are great in their own way, but an urban adventure demands much more improv on the DM's part. Players will want to go to the...

D&D 5E What Makes a Good Urban Adventure?

The City of Skulls by Carl Sargent is a good urban adventure for high level (9-12). Frog God Games 'The Blight: Richard Pett's Crooked City comes out later this summer and looks very good. There is also a high level adventure in Quests of Doom called "Sewers of the Underguild" that could be...

D&D 5E Help with 19th level boss fight

Just curious, but how is using a silver dragon's paralyzing breath more fun than using counterspell/forcecage combo? Sure, the party gets a save every round against the paralysyis but a DC24 Con save is pretty hard and the cone is certain to hit everyone. A player waiting every round for his...

D&D 5E Help with 19th level boss fight

There are a lot of great ideas here, especially Quickleaf's Lair Actions. Distance Distortion is very appropriate here, and especially useful with the party's excellent plan to charge Vlaakith with antimagic field. In a situation like this, it makes little sense that Vlaakith - knowing what she...

D&D 5E Is WotC ever going to release something high level? Even as UA test material?

Just skimming over your notes and its a fantastic conversion, Charles. Nicely done! Reading this sure takes me back to when I ran my players through LQB back around 2004. Good times! Thanks!

D&D 5E Thoughts On How To Do High Level Adventures.

The Angry GM wrote an interesting 5e article on designing solo/boss fights using a two-in-one creature Paragon template. http://theangrygm.com/return-of-the-son-of-the-dd-boss-fight-now-in-5e/ Of course, it's advice that can be used for any level of play but might make for a more appropriate...

D&D 5E Is WotC ever going to release something high level? Even as UA test material?

That sounds interesting, I'd really like to see what you've done with it. Is it possible for you to send me your conversion notes? If so, just shoot me a PM and I'll give you my email address.

D&D 5E Is WotC ever going to release something high level? Even as UA test material?

Me too, but I found H2 to be decent as a stand-alone module. Yeah it's funny, I can really enjoy modules that are grounded in a prehistoric setting (like Isle of the Ape) but for some reason Isle of Dread does nothing for me. I find it really boring.

D&D 5E Is WotC ever going to release something high level? Even as UA test material?

If we're talking modules over 14th level, there are a few that were done decently: H2 The Mines of Bloodstone is for levels 16-18 and does a pretty good job of challenging high level characters. There are some bits that were a little contrived for my tastes, such as the "Tests of Orcus" portion...

D&D 5E Survivor Classic Modules: THE SINISTER SECRET OF SALTMARSH WINS!

That's a good contender for another round of Survivor modules: second generation 1e AD&D modules covering a selection from '83 - '88 (before 2nd edition). There were some excellent modules in that period that don't attract as much love/hate attention that many of the classics get that Lowkey...

D&D 5E Survivor Classic Modules: THE SINISTER SECRET OF SALTMARSH WINS!

Yeah its an excellent series. U3 is probably my favourite by a very narrow margin, even tho its extremely difficult its a great finale. I love how the PCs are (hopefully) instrumental in allying all the various races to stand against the common foe and the aquatic environment is outstanding. U1...

D&D 5E Are You Excited about Tomb of Annihilation?

Its pretty easy for a DM to have any smart BBEG arbitrarily kill off the party while they're sleeping or separated in the city during downtime activity, but that is obviously not fun. That's just laziness. As you mentioned in a previous post, there has to be a balance struck between smart...

C1 The Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan 0 S4 The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth 3 U1-U3 Saltmarsh Series 6 It pains me to vote any of these down, but I gotta go with my all time fave.

D&D 5E Are You Excited about Tomb of Annihilation?

I think there are generally two schools of thought when it comes to BBEGs: those who view them as a solo boss and those who don't. I fall into the latter category, as exemplified in hawkeyefan's post. I wouldn't argue that a 10th level party cannot chew through 135 hp with ease, because they...

D&D 5E Are You Excited about Tomb of Annihilation?

Not sure I agree with that, since you're approaching it with merely its hit points against a 10th level party. There's a lot a party will need to contend with before they get to the lich's hit points, if one is played properly. If my players somehow miraculously managed to get the jump on a...

D&D 5E Looking for Short Urban Adventures for Levels 1-3

U1 The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh is pretty ideal as it can be two short separate adventures or tied together as a two-part adventure.

D&D 5E Are You Excited about Tomb of Annihilation?

I've always been a fan of the original ToH and Acererak, so I'm interested to see what spin WotC has put on it. Greyhawk is my campaign world of choice so I will be relocating it from the Realms, but the jungle location has my curiosity piqued. In GH canon, Acererak (while still a lich) once...
