AD&D, looking backwards, and personal experiences

Like the OP I also started playing in the 1990s (1991) with 1st Edition. We were introduced to the game by my friend's older brother. We played for three years without ever knowing there was a "2nd Edition." It was only after we started playing Magic: the Gathering (and after David got his...

    Looking for DM table

It would be nice to have something like this but, unlike 4th Edition, the underlying math of 3rd Edition is not that precise. I think the closest you will get is the character class tables in the DMG or the mathematical analysis done in Trailblazer.

    That's not a very high standard. :p

D&D 5E Do you want D&D Next to succeed?

Oh, I know that they are out there; it's their reasons for pooping in the sandbox* that I just don't understand. Sadly, these people exist in all walks of life. * Edit: wanting it to fail.

D&D 5E Do you want D&D Next to succeed?

Absolutely. I am not sure why anyone would want D&D Next to fail. :hmm:

When the dice are against you... your worst dice rolls ever

Two anecdotes! I was playing a cleric/rogue of Saint Cuthbert, 3.5 rules with a 10 Con. At levels 2 through 5 I rolled minimum for hit points on my d6s and d8s! What made matters worse was that whenever I cast a cure spell the result was almost always a 1 or 2 on the d8. Not only was the...

Do you like spell and effect durations?

I was using "adventure" merely as a placeholder based on Yora's description above; I'm largely indifferent to the terminology. My preferred gaming style is closer to a West Marches/Wilderlands wilderness-exploration campaign with a heavy dose of player-driven plots and political and court...

Do you like spell and effect durations?

This is one of those issues (like hit points and movement) where the duration expression can be written in multiple ways thereby giving individual groups the option to choose what is best for their group. Perhaps something like the following: Encounter (1 round/level) Adventure (10...

Who cares about Otiluke, Mordenkainen, Rary and whatever geezer names they trot out.

Which version do you choose? Rary the Mage or Rary the Traitor? Do you include information about them that occured in Living Greyhawk? Even is many, many players of D&D didn't participate? Or, perhaps instead, we just say something like "Tenser is an anagram of Ernest, son of Gary Gygax, and...

    D&D 5E Another D&D Next Playtest Survey

Rope Trick was on the list. I commented on making sure the duration was something closer to 1st Edition's 2 turns/level as opposed to 3rd Edition's 1 hour/level. I don't remember the 1st Edition version to be overly powerful.

    D&D 5E Another D&D Next Playtest Survey

One point I found myself coming back to in the comments was to clean up the number of spells that have similar or inverse applications. Do we really need both Daylight and Darkness to be seperate spells? Do we really need Animate Dead/Create Undead/Create Greater Undead as diffenerent spells...

    Can intelligent undead read?

As long as it is an intelligent undead (and is not a single-classed barbarian) I don't see why it can't read.

Thanks. I suspected that this is what you would say. When it comes to exploration, social interaction, and strategic decision making - would you say that you rely more on player action as opposed to skill/ability checks? For example, if you have a social situation where the fighter was...

    D&D 3E/3.5 Fixing 3.5 full casters

The latter few pages of this thread contain a discussion about the utility of fighters vis-a-vis wizards. One of the arguements presented by those who viewed fighters as having utility was that they had greater staying power than a wizard does (i.e. once a wizard is out of spells their...

How do you *play* your Vancian wizard?

There is a reason I use Jacob Marley as my moniker. This is the same approach I take to playing clerics, wizards, (p)et(er) cetera. :p

kitcik Re: the experience comment - I think I wasn't clear in what I meant. What I meant was to create two identical parties (i.e. a cleric, a fighter, a rogue, and a wizard, or whatever the parties may be), then swap out the fighter with the class you are trying to compare it with and play both...

The problem is that gaming experiences are unique. The context of those experiences matter. Everything from the make-up of the party, the number of players, the level of optimization of the characters, and the strategic/tactical/logistical decisions made by the players will affect how useful any...

    D&D 5E I demand randomization in 5e.

Depends on the player. Being the sharp-witted person that I am, I'd appreciate the irony that I am 'better' with my really big hammer than I am with my rapier.
