    Converting to 3.5 woes...

Whilst I, on the whole, like the changes in D&D3.5, I have some sympathy for Limper, our thread starter. He clearly plays in a quite complex and overlapping series of campaigns, some of which have advanced quite far. In these circumstances, I tend to feel the DM and players would do better to...

    A theory of Magic

Aha! Well that, my friend, is the crux of the matter! When magic appears only as part of the backdrop of a setting, and not in the hands of the PCs, then it can be as mysterious as the DM wants, since only he or she has to understand the reasons (or can have things happen entirely on a whim)...

    (UN)Official "Praise Olgar" thread

Absolutely. Olgar did a grand job of collecting all those juicy tidbits as they dribbled into the public domain. You really helped the overall quality of the discussion of D&D3.5, by making sure we had the facts compiled. So three cheers for the 'Eric Noah in a Thread'! :) Hip,hip!

    Prestige classes in 3.5e

I think it's fair to say though that discussion of 3.5 has nerfed the value of the 'nerf' word. ;)

(OT) Holy Bovine Is Out Of The Hospital *UPDATE*

Like others I worried for the worst when I read the title, but I am glad to hear that things are going well. So get well soon, Mr Moo-Cow; the board needs you back! And if you could, take this as an enforced opportunity to study the 3.5 rules in detail for us. We'll expect a full report! :D

    Sorcerer or Wizard?

To summarise LuYangShih's point (okay to add my spin on it! ;) ): the flexibility of a Wizard to be able to learn any spell is very much in the hands of the DM. Partly it is, as LYS says, a matter of whether there are spells available in hte game to learn. A lot of DMs, it seems, deliberately...

    Do you use Psionics?

Yes, I think that thought captures my lot's sentiments rather well. I think we'd perhaps try, as ForceUser mentions, a pure Psionic setting. But we're not happy with the muddying addition of Psionics to the Arcane/Divine mix. Not that we couldn't create a handwave, but we see no advantage to do so.

    Tips for 1E, 2E DM in 3E

One thing I feel I want to add to this. The game rewards experience for overcoming challenges. Now the specific challenges of monsters and traps are referred to in the DMG, but it is also clear that XP can be awarded for any challenge. Is it important to persude the Count to let the PCs...

Does the DnD economy need to go through a period of deflation?

I must confess that when I determine treasure, I just take the total value as a proxy for the value of items possessed by a person or creature. So if the valmpire lord was supposed to have say 5000gp of goods (on his person and in his lair), I might say things like ermine robe (value 250gp)...

    How cool is 3.5e grappling

Yes, at times like this it's important to remember that D&D is an Heroic Fantasy Game, so don't think too much about what the 'real world' would allow. Instead think of what you'd see in movies - improbable jabs to dislodge opponents briefly, running up an opponent, even the classic scrumdown...

    Compiled 3.5 Revisions

And I also refer you to heirodule's thread where he has a copy of the rules for the new Boccob's Blessed Book. It is 1000 pages long and specifically says it allows the owner to scribe spells without the normal scribing costs. It costs 12500gp these days. as heirodule also notes, it's another...

    Compiled 3.5 Revisions

From the new images posted by GamingReport.com: Armour (and I suspect Weapon) special abilties are divided into two categories. Those that cost an additional 'bonus', just as now (e.g. Ghost Touch +3 bonus). But others are costed at a flat price (e.g. Improved Fire Resistance +42,000gp). I'd...

    [3.5] All, Some or None?

In general, Jester, I'd agree. The effects of specific rules can be hard to predict without seeing them in the matrix created by the whole ruleset. But sometimes, a specific rule can be seen from the outset to not fit the tenor of the campaign that you and your group want to run. In those cases...

    Nerfed Wildshape?

I think the problem with these 'Natural' abilties seems to arise because the designers of monsters don't step back and analyze what they're doing. The distinction between 'Extraordinary' and 'Supernatural' is 'does this effect require magic to manifest itself?' If yes, it's Supernatural, if not...

    [3.5] All, Some or None?

ALL rulebooks should be seen as a toolkit, with which the DM and players build a campaign. And different campaigns require different emphases and rules effects if they are to achieve a harmony between design and rules. So that's how I'll be treating D&D3.5 - as a large toolbox of ideas.

Energy Drain, one save or two?

That's a significant change, and a notable weakening of the energy-draining undead. Not that I think they're wrong to do that, mind you. It always felt wrong that, in play, the only way to avoid the effect was not to get hit at all! (Okay, or have a negative energy protection spell on you.)...

    Are you a killer DM?

Aha! Someone who thinks like I do! I have very rarely killed a PC in a D&D game, and then only when there was rank stupidity. My better players know that, if they help me to help them tell a good story, I will go out of my way to soften the blow. And those who don't are taught that, indeed...

    different style?

Do They Want to Role-Play Too? Just to inject a note of caution, redwing: Have you asked your [/i]players[/i] whether they want to add more role-play and political intrigue to the game? It's very important when introducing a change of style that you try and get your players onboard in...

    Converting your campaign to 3.5?

Psion, you and I haven't always agreed in other threads about the changes in 3.5, but this I would heartily endorse. D&D3.5, just like 3.0, is a toolbox. We should use the tools that will help frame our campaigns, and not the ones that we don't. For myself, I am taking the opportunity of the...
