Question about GSL - Scott please comment

Right. I meant concept, instead of term. The CONCEPT of In Perpetuity in some states (and nations) does not exist.

Question about GSL - Scott please comment

In Perpetuity is not a legal term that is enforceable everywhere in the US, much less everywhere in the world.

    Mike Mearls On the OGL

Which would mean that it was all a de-facto closed system anyway.

    Mike Mearls On the OGL

Oh, I get the point precisely. I know what happened, I watched it happen. My point is that people should use it that freely ANYWAY. It IS hypocritical when companies do that, but it's also something that is completely outside their control. If you want freedom like the software open source...

    Mike Mearls On the OGL

But you can. You can take their stuff and reprint it and put it on a wiki or do whatever. That's what the OGL says. See, in the opensource world that Dancey was trying to emulate with the OGL, if you get people saying stuff like that, their code gets copied, forked, and replaced. If you're...

    Mike Mearls On the OGL

And THIS was the point that someone should have taken it and DONE IT ANYWAY. If the gatekeepers do not allow anyone to alter the open content, you MUST get a new gatekeeper.

Question about GSL - Scott please comment

But.. you can change it. You can change it just like you can change a fork of the linux kernel or a fork of OpenOffice. Both of those exist. In fact, OpenOffice is a fork of StarOffice. The problem you have is that what you call the SRD is controlled by Wizards. But that can be forked...

Question about GSL - Scott please comment

I disagree. The core of the OGL , if the OGL was to be treated as a true open source license by the other developers in question, is the OGL itself. If you look in the OGL text itself, you will not find the terms SRD, System, Reference, or Document. Everything is content. It's either in...

Is 4E still D&D to you?

I'll disagree with this quote. D20 is strong for a lot of game styles, but it is painfully weak for others. Just ask the WW fans about that. Heck, my go to system for most other genres is Savage Worlds, simply because I don't think D20 does pulp as well. There are different systems for...

    Mike Mearls On the OGL

I think the true judgment on whether or not the OGL has failed lies not with Pathfinder or other 3.5/3.0 derivs. I think to see whether the license is a failure or not, we'll need to see other games using completely different systems become successful at it. Yes, the d20 derivs ARE important...

No stat blocks in modules per the GSL?

According to Wizards, it looks like you can. I'd change the powers up as well, just to make them fit more in there.. but I get the distinct impression that they intend for the 3pps to create MORE content. Personally, I just write adventures to sell to friends , and occasionally further, and...

    Mike Mearls On the OGL

Well, honestly, my FLGS hated the OGL. Sure, it produced some good products, but now every Tom Dick and Harry who could buy the rights from a movie product would create a RPG using D20. There are rows upon rows of merchndise that will never sell , will never be played, and are just crap...

Is 4E still D&D to you?

I don't think Hasbro/WOTC entirely cares if you think it's D&D or not. Clearly the hobby has been suffering as of late. The question truly is, can we get new people coming into the hobby who think this is D&D? Or.. are we going to lose the war to the electronic media? Because gaming on the...

Feelings About 4e vrs Feelings About the GSL

I might have missed it too, but I don't think new elements falls under their domain in this case. All the SRD and GSL seem to refer to are the things they own that they'll let you use.. in the case of new elements, those will be things that you own. They do discuss who owns what ideas in the GSL..

I just did something I never though I would do

This is dangerously close to being an edition wars thread. That said, I find it funny when people call 4.0 "WoW for Tabletop Gamers." Funny, because there IS a WoW for Tabletop Gamers ;)

Feelings About 4e vrs Feelings About the GSL

I think I'll manage with the GSL, as it's not really that much more restrictive than much of the other things I do when I delve into the business aspect of this hobby. I'll probably make some 4e adventures and sell them at my FLGS for low price to get him some profit, and a few other small...

    What does FLGS stand for?

When your profits are eaten into so badly that you can't pay much more than $5.75 to $6.95 an hour, and you can only hire people part time.. you don't really get the most dedicated people all of the time.

GSL: Am I wrong to be concerned?

To be fair, a friend of mine works at a book binding company, and they're allowed to do things at cost, and he did a very similar thing about the time that Mongoose did it. Even before 4e came out, some in my group were getting set up to print out the SRD on LULU.com. (Until, of course...

GSL: Am I wrong to be concerned?

That's somewhat of a misnomer, though, because the terms "In Perpetuity" are very regulated in the US, especially in California, where the jurisdiction under the old license would have been regulated. I imagine, if you get the clever lawyer, and if WOTC is as evil as you contend, they could...

    What does FLGS stand for?

Rabid: Do you game at my store? Seriously. I stopped really hangin with the roleplay groups at my store after one day when a player screamed out "Leeroy Jenkins" in the middle of a minor combat. I get the reference (sig/other just quit WoW) , but it was used wrong, was very loud, and was...
