I'm working a conversion for Castle Whiterock and need a Giant Praying Mantis. This is the Big fight for the level, and is level 1 encounter. Can you tell me if this seems well thought out? Thanks, Andy Giant Praying Mantis Solo Brute Initiative +2 Senses Perception +7 HP 200; Bloodied 100 AC...

Looking for a great PbP Rule System

Games with a heavy "narative" (see GSN) or story telling bents work best. You want soemthing driven by the characters, this is more campaign and style then rules. Keep the adventures as simple as posible. An adventure that sems painfully simple and short at a table will take a long time, abd...

    Castle Whiterock conversion thoughts?

Back in the early days of 3e these forums where crazy with conversions. I just bought Castle Whiterock for $5 - to good to pass up. Anyone have thoughts on converting it to 4e? Thanks, Andy

    D&D 4E 4e adventure for 10 & 11 year olds

Christmas break has begun- and just like when I was 10 my son and his buddies want to fill it with D&D- and I get to ref, now that’s a gift! I need a short minimal plot adventure –railroading is ok, that can be downloaded. We start tonite. Much like it was for me 30 years ago we have enough of...

How does a game work without skills?

It was called roleplaying. Back in the old days we had to do it a lot. You kids don't know how lucky you are with your rules that handle everything, just look at all those shinny books!

    D&D 4E Familars in 4e - are there?

Are there rules for Familars in 4e? If so where might I find them? Hopefully not somewhere obvious - there by making look foolish. Thanks, Andy

    Advice on PbP

All excellent advise so far. A few more I might add from my failed and successful PbP games. One roll systems that are heavy on storytelling work best, I’ve used Fudge, Heroquest with success- from what I’ve heard about them ORE and FATE would probably do well. This allows you to have a fair...

Any other Judges Guild fans here?

Find Inferno. The finest of the old JG stuff, sadly the second half never saw print.

D&D 4E Old School dungeon crawl w/ 4e -anyone doing it

My son and I got to play a little 1st edition dungeon crawl at Gen Con this year- it was awesome. It got me in the mood for a big ol' multi level dungeon of doom. my initial reaction is to go 1st edition or C&C, but I was wondering if 4e can do it well enough and if others are doing it, and how...

4e with 1 player- and a 10 yr old at that

Great stuff guys, I thank you. A pet sounds great, he's going with a Ranger so a pet's spot on. Gargoyle thanks for reminding me of the parents oldest trick - make him do the work. Up until now I'd been (foolishly or selfishly) doing all the writng to speed things up. I will have him make up his...

4e with 1 player- and a 10 yr old at that

Long ago my group broke up, moved away and /or had kids. Once or twice a year we get together for a quick one shot. Whaaa! poor me! Anyway my 10 yr old son has recently bought in to the 4e hype and so have I. We own the books and have read them. He wants me to run a campaign. I'm good with that...

Looking for a certain type of RPG...

Heroquest is a tabletop RPG, you are likely thinking of the old board game of the same name. It is a single conflict resolution- and a darn good one. It would easily convert to any game you wish. Dog's would convert with more work. In a Wicked Age has a single resolution mechanic, and convert...

Are PCs expected to beat skill challenges?

First a disclaimer- I have not actually read the rules for conflict resolution in 4e. That being said I anxiously await the 4e rules and from the posts in this thread I feel I’m going to like the conflict rules a lot. Skill check defeats do not mean player loss- it should be used as a way to...

possibly looking for a new system - need recommendations!

HeroQuest, it’s simple and elegant and yet can bring in the crunch if that’s what your after. In a creative group the characters are more fun than I’ve encountered with any other game, and the conflict resolution is always exciting – where else can a characters “smoldering sneer” be a useful...

What rules light fantasy system would you recommend for 'winging it'?

Oh Man! how could I have not recomended In a Wicked Age? I'll second that and retract my original post. It should be your first choice. Then I'd go Castles and Crusdaes which is slightly simpler then AD&D in my opinion. But my still fave system is HeroQuest, I loved FUDGE when it was first...

What rules light fantasy system would you recommend for 'winging it'?

As this is a D20 centric board I'll lead with Castles and Crusades- quick and lite, familiar enough that everyone will jump in and run with ease. But.... if it was me I'd go HeroQuest the RPG not the old boardgame. Simple, and elegant and open to anything with little or no effort.

Tell me about the terrain accessories...

Wargames terrain or wrgames scenery in ebay will give you a grat many hits. I'd also recomend the same in the Google machine, which will lead to manufacturers as well as do it yourself articles. And real rocks as has been posted make really good rocks
