I just used the word "maelstrom" at lunch a couple days ago, and only the German guy didn't recognize it. I guess it's most familiar in "maelstrom of controversy," a favorite turn of phrase among journalists. I have noticed that many people incorrectly take it as a synonym for "storm" though.

    M is for MURDER!

Smart murderers in D&D always get rid of the head. One time I had some players trying to question a guy about an assassination plot, and naturally an arrow ripped through him right as he was about to spill it. No problem - just speak with dead when they get a chance, right? This would have...

Help me, please!!!! Looking for an adventure..

No prob - I remember it because I was going to run it right after 3E came out, but the party leveled up much faster in the previous adventure than I'd expected.

"Maelstrom" is a bit overused in titles. It probably wasn't a bad idea to go with something else for a one-worder. I wouldn't consider it a rare word by any means, but it's definitely more literary than colloquial. "Stormwrack," maybe not brilliant but serviceable. It's standard RPG coinage...

Help me, please!!!! Looking for an adventure..

    "Dead of Winter" I believe.

    Bite me.

Morde me, literally, but it's not usual fightin' words in Latin. The old classic is irrumabo te!, which means "I'm going to violate you [in a certain way which would nowadays be regarded as homosexual]!" It is somewhat related semantically, since the basic meaning of irrumare is to suckle (as...

looking for downloaded dungeopn, where to find?

I had that same problem with RPGNow the first time I went there. It's a bit non-obvious.

looking for downloaded dungeopn, where to find?

I think all the ones at RPGArchive are free - must be a couple hundred for D&D anyway. As Mark noted, all the CDs are too. There's an undead-oriented one coming out soon, but it's more like 6th-7th level.

looking for downloaded dungeopn, where to find?

This one's pretty good, and vampire-centric. I'd guess it's properly about 9th-10th level in 3E terms: http://www.rpgarchive.com/index.php?page=adv1&advid=171 A good enhancementwhen I ran it was to put a vampire minotaur at the top of the elevator shaft and have him start chopping the chain when...

    Telephone Interviews

I agree - I've done it with most of my recent (OK, last ten year's) jobs, and I've never bothered with any special prep other than to get a solid meal beforehand. I'd only recommend that if it's just some personal quirk, like my food thing. I think I've even done second interviews on the phone...

What race is the Wizard in your group? (take II)

In 3E we briefly had a wizard who was an elf, but [s]he didn't stay in the group long, and we never had another one.

    Telephone Interviews

Oh, I was misreading it the post... for these preliminary phone interviews for jobs, the usual thing they're looking for is to find out things like: * whether you're a psycho * if you're really interested in the job or just grabbing at straws * if your basic career plans fit their organization...

Well, I know it's too late in the game for major restructuring, but there are two fairly simple things that I think would improve it a lot. First, perhaps make the beginning a little more like a beginning. Dropping straight into in the middle of a battle is probably not the best way to start a...

    Effects of banning "flashy" magic

If flashy magic is banned, only flashers will have magic.

I think the biggest thing I'd flag is the assumption of too much D&D background knowledge (and reference to D&D cliches), but then maybe that's what they want. The dialog is a bit flippant for the situation (very comic-booky), but again MTWTW. It's also always a bit jarring to me in fantasy...

"We were somewhere around Cygnus V, on the edge of the Nebula.."

The ones who blog seem to know him pretty well - I must have seen a dozen blog entries about it, and that's a population heavily skewed to the 18-28 range.

What races are appropriate to Heroic Bronze (Greece) setting

I said in one post "(aasimar is reasonable, but I'd probably tweak it a bit - demi-gods seldom had anything resembling spell-like abilities, but their stats were heroic)" Then I said: "I was thinking - demigods are probably more on the order of half-celestials in terms of power. Planetouched...

The last sentence spoils the fun

Yeah, I think it happens when they design a spell that has some horrible unbalancing flaw, so then they tack a bandaid on the end of it. "The target of this spell immediately dies no matter what it is. However, the spell does not work if the target has more than 5 HD or is normally immune to...
