    Initiative Order Question

The rogue stays at 18. He still gets a turn when his initiative comes round. His turn should consist of : Taking any ongoing damage at the start Making saves for any on going effects Making a death save. End

    XP-free games (SoW)

This is how we do it. Works really well. There have been other threads about this method of levelling up and quite a few groups are also doing it.

    Fighter Marking

It's also worth noting that you don't HAVE to mark something if you attack it - sometimes it is good not to (overwriting another character's mark, if you have too much heat on you etc). I can't remember any fighter powers that state that targets get marked, although there are plenty from other...

    Rings restricted by tier?

The design and development articles are not the rule books - they changed stuff quite a lot from all the early interviews before the rules were printed. They ended up just simplifying the rules so you can only wear 2 rings. They left the level restriction on rings to the whim of the DM in that...

    Power (healing surge) items

It's a minor action to activate the armour (only when you are bloodied. Our ranger used to great effect - he got surrounded by 5 skeletons and chose to activate the armour on his turn after he had attacked. The skeletons all attacked him on their next go - 4 hit but he only took 2 damage. I then...

    Healing between encounters

As others have said you don't have to be in a fight to use an encounter power, so healing word is perfectly fine to use if your party has enough time for the multiple short rests. If you couldn't use (encounter) powers outside of an encounter, then loads of utility powers would be useless.

    beastmaste rangers attks question

When you take a move action both you and the cat can move (although you don't both have to move) If you use a standard action you get to do whatever that standard action says you can do. It's best to regard standard attacks as a power that says standard action: attack target. If you tell your...

    Battle Pyres

That's the way I read the intent too - you set a load of people on fire then once per round you can make one of those fires flare up.

Pace of level advancement in 4th edition D&D

The reason we don't limit exp gain per session is what you get done in any given session can vary massivly - some sessions are whole day marathons, some are a couple of hours. In a marathon day session we may complete a whole dungeon level, or we may spend all day dicking around in town. To the...

[4E +] Dear wizards of the coast,

Late to the party yes, there have been many many of these already. Also many people viewing this will not have read it (like me) as it is a massive wall of text of a list of your opinions - not much to discuss.

Pace of level advancement in 4th edition D&D

We do this also. Our DM only uses the XP values for balancing encounters - we then level up when he deems it appropriate. We are currently running through the H series of adventures, so we level about twice in the course of the adventure, then once again at the end. It's amazing how well this...

    Magical Staff Weapons as Implements

It is intended - here is the quote from PHB P240 "A staff is a shaft of wood as tall or slightly taller than you are, sometimes crowned with a decorative crystal or some other arcane fetish. Fashioned either as a quarterstaff or a walking staff, it is also imbued with arcane enchantments so...

    Really Dumb Hellish Rebuke Question

Agreed it should be a standard action, roll damage with all modifiers. With your tactic of moving in and provoking an opportunity attack, remember that the monster is not forced to make an OP and is fully aware of all conditions on him so a smart monster would not fall for this.

    items on a bad guy

The thresholds are there to simplify monster and encounter design and to prevent you flooding the PC's with magic items. Take a monster with a threshold of +2 - his stats include the equivalent of a +2 magic weapon, armour and neck slot item. If you remove the threshold idea and drop his...
