D&D (2024) Does WotC view the Monk class as overtuned from their perspective?

Mostly agree, but Unarmed Strike proficiency with a d4 is not as valuable as a martial weapon proficiency. That's why WotC has deliberately (and IMHO mistakenly) refused to make Unarmed Strike a Martial Melee Weapon. This would allow monks to use many more feats and Martial Maneuvers that...

D&D (2024) Does WotC view the Monk class as overtuned from their perspective?

But who starts with a 19 AC in any class? If you have a 20 Dex and an 18 Wis. sure, but what game allows that at 1st level? and just what are you seeing scaling fast? Your martial arts die is a d4 at 1st. That doesn't scale damage to d8 with unarmed strike until 11th level and you could get that...

D&D (2024) Does WotC view the Monk class as overtuned from their perspective?

I think they see it as way more powerful than it is in play, and I think they are wrong (again). The Play test 6 Monk is the one subject that made me specifically angry at the designers. In 5e, Martial Arts giving a D4 is a non-benefit on everything but Unarmed Strike, Stunning Strike is...

D&D 5E please post advice for novice DM like myself

Have a session zero. As an example adding notes for one of mine. Not saying that you have to play my way, but you should have a session where before you play at all, expectations are discussed, rules are laid down etc. Most of the really bad mishaps can be avoided this way.

D&D (2024) My proposed fix for the Monk

Interesting, and there's a lot here that I like. IMHO the simple fixes are best for the game because players and DMs have the easiest time transitioning to them. My own thoughts on the play test monk: Give the monk a fighting style at 1st. Keep the increased damage die. A d4 on unarmed...

    D&D (2024) Playtest Packet 6: Monk reactions?

My own initial thoughts: Give the monk a fighting style at 1st. (most will pick Unarmed Fighting) Let Martial Arts Dice apply to Monk Weapons. (In the play test, they don't). Keep Monk Weapons in name and in design both for fun and Backward compatibility with abilities that use the Monk Weapon...

D&D 5E Can ki-fueled attack be triggered by step of the wind

Oops, you are correct. It's Hide. Still doesn't seem like Dodge is worth a Ki Point though.

D&D 5E Can ki-fueled attack be triggered by step of the wind

Ah, you are correct. It's Disengage, Dash or Hide. Still doesn't seem to be OP use of a Ki point compared to a flurry or a stunning Strike.

    D&D (2024) Playtest 6: Paladin ... Divine Smite is a Spell now

IMHO These spells should follow the template of Greenflame Blade and not require the Paladin's bonus action. Just make the somatic component the Melee Weapon Attack. Greenflame Blade and Booming Blade can be counter-spelled too but in my experience it rarely happens.

D&D 5E Can ki-fueled attack be triggered by step of the wind

A Rogue can use Cunning Action to Dodge as a bonus action. I have not seen it be OP but respect to the opinion. On topic, correct, if you are not spending the Ki, then Ki Fueled attack will not work. Remember if you're using your bonus action to dodge, you aren't using it for more attacks. One...

D&D 5E Can ki-fueled attack be triggered by step of the wind

Agree, it's No. As a side note, I think they should eliminate the Ki cost of Step of the Wind and of Patient Defense.

D&D (2024) Heightened Metabolism. See WotC? You CAN do it!

I was just going over my own first impressions of the monk. You hit on Heightened Metabolism being appropriate to an earlier level. My own feeling is that it should just be part of what Martial Discipline does. Then some of the later abilities in the play test could be moved earlier as well...

D&D (2024) How to reign in full casters for 1D&D? Maybe remove 6th to 9th level spells as a Variant rule.

At high levels, DMing, I count on players to be able to find solutions to almost any problem especially from 17th on when 9th level spells come online and where classes start to get their high level features. IMHO a lot of what you're trying to take away from casters is simply part of the game...

D&D (2024) Martial vs Caster: Removing the "Magical Dependencies" of high level.

It also occurs to me that if a non-caster had a high Arcana skill, perhaps it could be possible for him to know some way to stop an unattended ongoing spell effect.

D&D (2024) Martial vs Caster: Removing the "Magical Dependencies" of high level.

A non-caster can take the Ritual Caster feat in 5E. IMHO more higher level rituals would be beneficial. The higher level 'need' for a caster is to some extent inherent in a magical setting. bad guys can do spells and if the heroes can't they are at a disadvantage. Perhaps there should be more...

D&D (2024) Should Wish be an Epic boon?

Interesting idea. Instead of the recent playtest epic boons around getting spells or uses of a spell that were lower level, I suggested in the feedback, that you could have a boon that gives you one spell slot of a level that you have and one spell known and always prepared that you learn and...

D&D (2024) How would you change skills in 5.5e

Most of the complaints I see center around skills either not regularly being useful or being poorly defined as they are written. Perception and Investigation can be part of the same thing. If they are not, then Investigation should have a specific use that perception doesn't cover (directly...

    D&D (2024) I like the new Warlock

Agree. If 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th are a given at the appropriate levels and you can take a Invocation to get more if you want that would be nice but having those would be backward compatible. On my character, Improved pact Weapon, Eldritch Smite, and Life Drinker were important, I used Armor of...

D&D (2024) What do you expect/hope to see in future playtest packets? (+)

IMHO Drunken Master gives a free disengage without the KI point cost. That's good, but the monk really ought to be able to do that anyway. The other abilities of the subclass depend on multiple opponents or are situational. Especially at 17th. Intoxicated Frenzy is weak for the level. Open Hand...

D&D (2024) What do you expect/hope to see in future playtest packets? (+)

True, and that helps, but still d4s. The monk makes the Quarterstaff a better choice at low levels. Still doesn't measure up to the damage of the rogue of the same level with one sneak attack/turn even if the monk makes an extra attack.
