D&D 5E Is the sleep spell d&d 5e too powerful

Good example but others could wake up and sleep species that you must "slap" him awake. Someone must wake you up. So again have to give it to the mage with sleep.

D&D 5E Is the sleep spell d&d 5e too powerful

I hear you but for a spell level 1, it's quite powerful. I decided to add a saving throw and find that it balances out. At least gives a fighting chance. There is no game which the rules are perfect, I just think sleep was overlooked...

D&D 5E Is the sleep spell d&d 5e too powerful

I think you missed the point entirely, being powerful is beside the point. I just think that the sleep spell was designed poorly. It is off balanced compared to other 1st level spells. If you add a saving throw, it still is powerful but more balanced out. Take "command" for example, level 1 (one...

D&D 5E Is the sleep spell d&d 5e too powerful

Of course if he rolls low but the odds (the average) are in his favor. Again all I'm saying is that the power of the sleep spell was over looked. I just think that a saving throw might be a good solution.

D&D 5E Is the sleep spell d&d 5e too powerful

I love the game, I think that the sleep spell was not properly designed. Add a saving throw and it is still powerful but more fair and balanced with other spells.

D&D 5E Is the sleep spell d&d 5e too powerful

Ok, as for initiative, the spell could be cast as a surprise. If not, fine initiative. If he loses of course he's in trouble but if he wins and there are 2 targets (most likely the're dead) with the possibility of a third.

D&D 5E Is the sleep spell d&d 5e too powerful

Ok, but he would have killed the rogue, the priest and heavily damaged the fighter...to me, for a first level spell with no saving throw, is extremely (albeit) too powerful!

D&D 5E Is the sleep spell d&d 5e too powerful

All I'm saying is that a 1st level wizard can very easily kill two other 1st levels (possibly 3) without it being complicated or in the least difficult (no saving throw). This cannot be said for any other 1st level class or spell (that I know of) Even "command" (also spell level 1) in which you...

D&D 5E Is the sleep spell d&d 5e too powerful

Good point for the elf, yet I strongly feel that this is a way too powerful spell for a 1st level. Which offers NO SAVING THROW. Thanks for your insight

D&D 5E Is the sleep spell d&d 5e too powerful

You are the fourth member of the party, so three targets. It is easy to canculate yourself out of the affected area. So far pretty simple scenario with a fatal outcome. If there are 2 targets the probability is almost 100% and with 3 targets, still very high.

D&D 5E Is the sleep spell d&d 5e too powerful

A quarter staff does 1d8 + 1d8 (critical) + any other bonuses (advantage). So high chance of killing the rogue, then the cleric and maybe finish off the fighter.

D&D 5E Is the sleep spell d&d 5e too powerful

The group doesn't even know there getting attacked, Bam (out of the blue and out of the affected area) he casts sleep!

D&D 5E Is the sleep spell d&d 5e too powerful

I'm looking at this from a purely statistical point of view (which many players do) and I find that it is way too powerful. There should be a saving throw or some kind of modification?

D&D 5E Is the sleep spell d&d 5e too powerful

Once again, you say six. I say 4 ( 3 not including yourself) even easier a party of 3. So once again, a 1st level spell capable of wiping out 2 ( possibly 3) party members with a high probablity chance of success!

D&D 5E Is the sleep spell d&d 5e too powerful

Can you answer my question (from my example) please, thank you. A 1st level wizard has a high chance of wiping out the rest of his party with one spell, sleep!

D&D 5E Is the sleep spell d&d 5e too powerful

Let' say the wizard cats the spell so that he is not in the area of affect? I want you to look at it as purely tactical. I mean, he has the capability of wiping out the group! Statistically speaking
