    Life sucks

Page 58. The wildshaping ranger variant takes all of about five lines. Gains wildshape (small and medium animals only) + barbarian's fast movement, loses all combat styles. I think the original poster would be even more disappointed to have paid for the whole book for just this one little...

How Does Your Party Divide Treasure?

As a DM I don't get involved. They record all the stuff and distribute it amongst themselves. Then, nine times out of ten, they forget they have the stuff and never use it. I've got a 10th level sorcerer/cleric player with a deck of illusions that he's had since about 3rd level and he's used...

Funny stuff said at the gaming table

"Where do these stairs go?" "They go up!" (I think that one happens every session). In the voice of the John Rhys Davies character 'Salah' from Raiders of the Lost Arc: "Orcs. Very dangerous. You go first." Tiefling Soulknife character, peeved at another PC, to the DM: "Should I make a Will...

Have you ever searched the net on your EN World Handle?

Mine just turns up tons of posts on various RPG sites like Mortality, Fantasy Flight, RPGHost, Wizards, Mongoose, Silven Crossroads, and here of course. The odd thing is that I've posted on other sites but those don't get picked up by Google. Take off the "dm" and just search for "samoth" and...

    What makes D&D, well, D&D?

Somebody just watched "Full Metal Jacket". :) The mechanics of D&D definitely help define it, but another part of it for me is the general idea that this group of heroes can just march around the world killing things and looting the bodies and that's just fine. They define the ideas of right...

The Veiled Society - your experiences?

This was the first adventure I used to christened my 3E/3.5 campaign. I had never played it back in the day but I bought it at a B. Dalton's when I was in Junior High school many moons ago. [Crothian - the special pull-out section were little figures kind of like SJG "Cardboard Heroes" that...

    Arcana Unearthed/Evolved Champion Class

Back before Monte changed his boards over there was a thread that had alternate causes for Champions to, well, champion. I can't seem to find an equivalent thread on his boards now, so I figured I'd asked here. Specifically, I am intersted in making a Champion of Hope and also a rival...

D&D Community Different Than the D20 Community?

That fits my group, although one player has recently decided to start DM'ing and has purchased the DMG, MM, MotP, Planar Handbook, and one non-Wotc choice, Monte Cook's Beyond Countless Doorways. I'm not sure, but he might be wanting to run a planar-type campaign...

Puns, Bad Jokes, and Other Disruptions to the Illusion of Reality

That's a great idea. We do that, and I guess I always thought it was pretty normal behavior. I wonder how many other groups have these kinds of "outlets", though? And, as a DM sometimes, I can appreciate what you say about being respectful of the GM's efforts to create the world. Sometimes...

Puns, Bad Jokes, and Other Disruptions to the Illusion of Reality

I didn't know it was possible to play D&D without this. Oh, and Monty Python quotes. A must. I've noticed I have a very different attitude as a player versus as a DM, but my DM when I play basically told me that jokes were part of the fun and were expected and encouraged, in moderation...

Fellow DM, How do you handle Hit Point at each new level ?

Lots of different ways, depending on the game. As a DM, I allow them to reroll 1s and 2s, but of course monsters/adversaries get this as well. In games I play, some have the option of re-roll if less than average, and one is straight die-roll (no modification other than Con modifier).

I think he should look like this: Sorry - the post on humor in games must've gotten to me.

HELP: Looking for good murder or mystery module...

There's an old Basic D&D Module (B6) called "The Veiled Society" that I used as the first adventure for my current 3.0/3.5 campaign (we started about 4 years ago). I had to modify it quite a bit in terms of monsters and stuff, but the basic storyline worked pretty well. It's a city-based...

Do you use song lyrics as inspiration for adventures?

I noticed that, too, while reading through the thread today. Either the metalheads are just really vocal or there's a disproportionate amount of metal listeners on ENWorld. I'd love to hear some other non-metal choices. I keep trying to think of a jazz song that would be cool, but the only...

Do you use song lyrics as inspiration for adventures?

Lately I've been thinking it would be interesting to have a series of encounters for my players. If I did it right, they probably wouldn't put it all together: "There's a king on a throne with his eyes torn out, There's a blind man looking for a shadow of doubt, There's a rich man sleeping on...

How would you market D&D? A Hypothetical exercise

As I've been thinking about it some more, I think that to come anywhere close to achieving the original goal of increasing the number of players by 20% in the next 18 months (let's forget dealing with how exactly you would measure that goal - does the base of "current players" include everyone...

How would you market D&D? A Hypothetical exercise

That's a good idea, and I like that you qualified it with the "no camp, no goofiness". Too many executives seem to think that Fantasy has to be camp to be successful. I hope that the LOTR movie trilogy helped to quell that kind of thinking. I hate small thinkers like that who only focus on...

    What would you have done?

Yep. You'll note in my example that it happened twice, and after the second time, I pulled the player aside and told him that, next time, afterwards, I would note a change of the character's alignment to chaotic evil. Three times would be enough for me to indicate a pattern. Seems like a...

    What would you have done?

I promised myself I wouldn't get dragged into a long discussion on alignment again, but this one's been fairly civil and most of the posts are pretty thought-provoking. It's interesting to read different people's reactions. I agree with that, and thought I had indicated that in my posts...
