How do you feel about the future of D&D after the official announcements?

Thank you. It came to me yesterday and I've been waiting for the right moment to use it. I'd love it if it caught on. Edit: And it is certainly not intended to be denigrating.

How do you feel about the future of D&D after the official announcements?

Positive. Sceptical but positive. And curious. Will I join the 5mind? Maybe.

Why the love for the Edition Treadmill?

I'm interested in new games, full stop. :) That does not equate to being inclined to pick up every edition of game x.

Why the love for the Edition Treadmill?

I think that calling 3e and 3.5 different editions is pushing it. Using anything from 3.0 in 3.5 or vice-versa is possible with nearly (or absolutely) zero effort. Anyway, it does not matter to me how long an edition lasts. I played 1e from 78-95 and I've played 3.x from 2001 to the present...

D&D 5E What big thing is supposed to be next week?

Interesting that WotC are conducting this experiment but I can't help thinking of the equation: Camel = Horse + Committee Seems most likely to result in a design that appeals to the lowest common denominator. Quite the opposite of how the original game was conceived and developed. Still, will...

    Tolkien's 'poor' prose

Now I don't take much issue with this but I post the link because I suspect others may be interested. JRR Tolkien's Nobel prize chances dashed by 'poor prose' | Books | guardian.co.uk The comments below the article are worth a read, too, I think.

    McGuffin Help

Will Doyle Sorry but I must question the forgotten entirely part of your definition. I have never encountered that before and I have studied screenwriting and worked as a screenwriter. My understanding is that a McGuffin can be anywhere on a scale from ever-present to forgotten entirely by the...

    McGuffin Help

I like the suggestions here, so mine will build on them. If you want the McGuffin to stick around longer but not have it constantly annoy the characters, its property could be that it returns to the attuned character's possession on a full moon, a Friday or when it's raining (because the same...

    Brinkmanship

Absolutely. And don't run a game in a room with collapsible furniture.

    Brinkmanship

It is a terribly unprepared DM trying to railroad the party. By using brinkmanship. I suspect that is all too often at the root of such confrontation. I've been guilty of lots of poor DMing decisions but I think that's one I've avoided, so far. Fingers crossed and all that.

    Brinkmanship

I was chatting with a colleague the other day about his D&D playing experience. He used to play when he was in his teens and was thinking about joining a game I'm about to start running for friends at work. His story involved a session in which the players simply didn't want to go in the...

D&D 1E Thinking of bringing my 1e AD&D DMG to my 4e game.

Ah. It's the fact that you're an Aussie that made me think you were the Aussie Tanstaafl from my old London group. I mean, how many Aussie Tanstaafls can there possibly be? Apologies for the threadjack. I still use my 1e DMG but only between games. I don't even like carrying the books I...

D&D 1E Thinking of bringing my 1e AD&D DMG to my 4e game.

If you're the Tanstaafl I think you are, you never brought your 1e DMG to one of the games I played with you. But then you never seemed to need a twisted creature from the lower planes of chaos. :p Apologies if you never used to play at the London Meetup...

If WotC Released D&D 3.75 Tomorrow....

I would certainly consider buying a 3.75. But it wouldn't be a done deal. The main reason why I didn't buy into 4e was because I didn't think - and still don't believe - that 3.x is so broken that I need to spend a shed load of money on top of what I've already spent, in order to fix a few...

    Too many TPKs?

Plus, the defenders may be under orders not to leave the dungeon/area or not to enter the forest, cross the bridge or whatever the landmark may be. There are plenty of things a DM can do to reign in the actions of the NPCs or monsters, even if the party initially considers the resulting...

Owning multiple copies of RPG books

I have two each of the 1e PHB and DMG. My original copies are knackered but I keep them for sentimental reasons, especially as the now spineless PHB is a first print. The ones I use are near mint condition copies of similar print runs I picked up for a couple of quid apiece on eBay. I used to...

    TPK Dillema

Can I strongly suggest you don't go for the dream scenario? "It was only a dream," is one of the least satisfying plot devices in the history of least satisfying plot devices. Time travel isn't much better. Capturing the last party member alive is not bad, especially as it can take an adventure...

WIR S1 Tomb of Horrors [SPOILERS!! SPOILERS EVERYWHERE!!]‏

There's a thread in the 4e form at the moment about TPKs that you may find interesting. That TPKs can render GM preparations, plot, campaign backgrounds, whatever redundant is nothing new. But that is in itself no reason to avoid them, as Gentlegamer points out.
