MERGED - "About Edition Wars" threads x9

When AD&D came it, it was described by TSR as a different game from D&D. The D&D line ended, and the AD&D line dropped the A with 3e. If 3.5 is a different edition than 3.0, then 4e is actually the 5th edition of the game. Of course, despite what TSR said about them being different games (which...

    An Older Experience System

The earlier editions of the game had the rule that you gain 1 XP for each gp of treasure gained. This is not the system Arneson used. As far as I know, Arneson awarded XP for money that was spent, not gained. This minor difference had some interesting consequences. I just get back from an...

D&D 5E Ultimate Magic Playtesting to Start Next Week

While I love the new character options that new classes bring, I'm not really upset by this. As long as they provide more of those fabulous archetypes, I'm happy. Probably better that way, in any case.

D&D 5E Ultimate Magic Playtesting to Start Next Week

Something just occurred to me. I wonder if the magus will use regular magic or the new words of power system. Ah well, we'll find out soon enough.

Racial Paragons: What do you think?

I see. Yeah, that sounds like it would be a great option to have, if it served a particular purpose in the campaign. Of all the examples you give, I like the Arcana Evolved idea best. With the Savage Species model, you need to complete all of the levels in the monster class before taking levels...

Racial Paragons: What do you think?

I like the basic idea, but it depends on how they might be used. Do you have some context in mind?

    Players, GMs, and "My character"...

I fully agree. As a player, I hate it when DMs try to dictate what my character will do - and I've had DMs try it. I don't merely say, "My character wouldn't do that," I say, "My character is mine to play, stop assuming what he/she will do," just to be clear. I once saw a DM stipulate that a PC...

Pathfinder 1E Are there any plans for a Pathfinder "basic"?

I'm of the opinion that a Pathfinder Basic should be both a complete game and also fully compatible with the Core Rulebook. It should be playable as is, so that those who buy it don't feel ripped off at having bought nothing more than a preview. At the same time, people should be able to expand...

Pathfinder 1E Are there any plans for a Pathfinder "basic"?

Agreed. It would be nice if you could take inspiration from the Mentzer Basic Set, but if you do, please take that inspiration from the contents of the set, and not just from what the box looks like on the outside.

    D&D is just a game...right?

Just as a good movie or a good novel can make us feel emotions, so can a good game, especially if it has a narrative component as D&D does.

    What Would a Pirate Do?

The various Freeport Companions by Green Ronin present pirate classes for a variety of game systems, including 4e. They may be worth looking at, even just for ideas.

    What Would a Pirate Do?

Make no mistake - those pirates were bad people who did bad things. They certainly benefited from some of the claims they made about themselves. But there are a few points to keep in mind. First, a desire for plunder is not incompatible with patriotic feelings. Second, a rebellion against...

    What Would a Pirate Do?

It depends on the pirates. What are the circumstances that led them to piracy? Are they outlaws, deserters, privateers? During the Golden Age of Piracy, many (not all) pirates were deserters of the navy, so they would have had that training. Pirates would also sometimes press needed...

Summoner: Giving the People What They Want

It is for this very reason that I've considered using the summoner as a type of sha'ir - having the eidolon look like a genie.

Will the best knight (class) step forward?

It's a good book, and those knight classes are pretty colourful. I would also recommend looking at the Pathfinder cavalier. The Pathfinder classes have a bit of a power-boost compared to 3.5, but the concept there is great.
