It completely hoses them. Lanchester's Square Law is no minor thing, and removing a BBEG from the safety of his minions so that you can dogpile him later (yes, even if just a round later...) is a Big Deal. That said-- there's other ways to majorly hose a BBEG with 8th level spells (and lower).
