D&D 5E Ideas for an evil force trapped in rock

Shadowdweller00, thanks for the Christmas gifts! I can't unpack it all in one post, lol :D Yes! Origin for the artifact. Duergar are level-appropriate now, but I'd rather fire some imaginations with a vision of an artifact forged in Hell -- where I'd like to take the PCs when they're...

D&D 5E Ideas for an evil force trapped in rock

Where'd you learn the technique to frame scenarios with success and failure? I love it! Those are really elegant ideas. I'd use "Bottomless Pit" if I weren't running Ravenloft next. I've actually thought of using a Ghost to seed a few important details about the mine operation and the NPCs'...

D&D 5E Ideas for an evil force trapped in rock

I got two mining job titles from the DMG's beautiful "Chamber Purpose" table for rooms in a mine: "supervisor" and "manager" (p.293). I translated those into deathlocks and wights. I got into a bit of that, but I like your idea of a whole community. This is all I've got in my notes on the...

D&D 5E Ideas for an evil force trapped in rock

Yep, but that wouldn't be imitating their former lives, which all these skeletons do, on auto-pilot. They behave like the miners they were. I'll be running Ravenloft next, so a vampire is out (but yeah the stone would keep a vamp imprisoned). Lich? I'd have to seriously weaken it somehow...

D&D 5E Ideas for an evil force trapped in rock

I just checked out this "cool scene." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fvzPOQRRxw Why do you recommend Wishmaster? What's the gist of the inspiration?

Thanks! Alas, the party's been there already, and I replaced the Nothic with a Grell or Grick.

D&D 5E Ideas for an evil force trapped in rock

Dude, you are definitely thinking outside the box! Thanks. Think I prefer the bones of a dead god. It merges a power and an artifact. I don't think I've ever designed an artifact. Fun! After 135 views you'd figure we'd have more ideas sprinkled here, but I guess it's a pretty restrictive scenario.

    D&D 5E 5e's underwhelming releases

Why don't we see home brewed adventures posted to enworld?

    D&D 5E 5e's underwhelming releases

Heh, those are just my preferences for priorities going forward: more adventures, monsters.

    D&D 5E 5e's underwhelming releases

I bought HotDQ and disliked it, and have been scrambling for adventures ever since. We need another MM and more adventures.

D&D 5E Ideas for an evil force trapped in rock

Help! Imagine that the mine in Wave Echo Cave is up and running with skeletons mining away as they did in life. Every day three teams of 10 skeletons gear up with picks, hammers, chisels and shovels and put in an 8-hour shift * under the supervision of some deathlocks and wights. There's more...

    D&D 5E Good Smoke Rules?

It's a weird omission from the DMG. Two DMs in two weeks posing the same question in one corner of the web suggests others will need a ruling as well. Sounds like fodder for the new Sage Advice column :D

    D&D 5E Good Smoke Rules?

I did a little research into this in a thread two weeks ago, 5e smoke inhalation. I found a rule from 3.5e and injected a bit of reality from some firefighting websites. The interesting thing is what happens in the two minutes (or less, your choice) up to the point where smoke would kill an...

Nubulous, you mad scientist. How do you unveil that to the players at the table?

    D&D 5E Awarding Inspiration

LOL, I forget, and the guilt is awful! Bad DM! Bad DM! I brought this up with a player just last night. She didn't actually like the DMG option of players controlling inspiration, but wanted to be able to petition the DM, which works for me since it reminds me of the mechanic in the presence of...

D&D 5E Phandelver first game experience

I think they're supposed to be 5th level upon finished LMoP. I'd been hoping to get my group of 6 to 6th level with my expansion, but it's a crazy amount of experience (45,000). That's a lot of encounters. Consider adding: a Stone Guardian guarding a vault an epic vault , but most of its...

Help with DMG mining cubic volume, p.106

Alright, I've dropped the numbers into a formula for my scenario of three, 8-hours shifts of 10 skeletal Dwaves digging continuously into hard rock for 500 years. Using the cube root of the 35' provided by Gygax for each Dwarf per shift, a passage that's 10' high by 10' wide will be 33.72 miles...

D&D 5E Revenge of Iarno Albrek

Ah, elegant. Now I really wish I could recreate that battle. Intrigued, a sage one day investigates the mysterious site and, as he's learned in temporal theory (among many other theories) he detects a temporal distortion in the resonance. He speculates in his journal that this group, which he...

D&D 5E Phandelver first game experience

Difficult monsters lie between the territory that the Drow has claimed and the Forge of Spells. So he's snookered when the players arrive. Lethal encounters: Rooms 9 and 12, the great cavern (ghouls) and smelter cavern (zombies and flameskull), are lethal. So are rooms 18 and 19 experienced...
