Tabletopocalypse Now - GMS' thoughts about the decline in the hobby

I can say with certainty that D&D was considered "uncool" among those with access and willingness to play other RPGs since at least '80. This is nothing new and the RPGs had their strong time during that period. Or will it become like bridge where the bulk of the players are the elderly and...

Tabletopocalypse Now - GMS' thoughts about the decline in the hobby

I do not think anyone has ever suggested it will die off completely. As many have suggested, bridge is a game that's popularity (at least in the U.S.) is literally dying off*. The average age in the ACBL was closing in on sixty a decade or more ago, and I am sure it has crept up lately...

Tabletopocalypse Now - GMS' thoughts about the decline in the hobby

I played at home, but bought my product from what would have been a specialty store in those days (a hobby and craft store, the first hobby gaming store wouldn't hit Delaware for another couple of years). I see a lot of polls here asking where people learnt the game. Most starting gaming...

Tabletopocalypse Now - GMS' thoughts about the decline in the hobby

I am in the middle ground. I do feel those that say the hobby is going strong do have their heads in the sand and are ignoring the obvious signs of a declining hobby. On the other hand, the "hard data" given tend not to be the strongest of signs. The key is these unreliable signs still almost...

    "Selling Threads" In General

It used to not be allowed, when there was a forum for it. The standards seem to have been relaxed, and I am against it. I don't want "for sale" threads clogging up general discussion.

Letting Players Narrate in the Game?

I disagree with something like this being "not a traditional roleplaying game." IT's something of a sliding scale, as mentioned before. I know of a few roleplaying games I would consider "traditional" that use some level of player control over the narrative. One of my favorite RPGs is James...

    Favorite adventure authors

I agree. No adventures I have read in the last handful of years have been as evocative as this series of adventures (admittedly, I have only run Chimes at Midnight). The series sets it self up so that it can easily be foreshadowed in adventures before the adventures are ran. They also can...

Have the WotC's pre-4E online Dungeon magazines disappeared?

Many thanks. Too late to dig now, but at first chance I will be sure to grab the Eberron adventure.

Have the WotC's pre-4E online Dungeon magazines disappeared?

Yes, there were a few online only issues of 3.5 Dungeon before 4E hit (and all were free) after Paizo finished. Paizo's last issue of Dungeon was #150. In fact, the one I am regretting not having is the last of Nic Logues "Victor Demain" trilogy that was in the online Dungeon.

Have the WotC's pre-4E online Dungeon magazines disappeared?

I went looking for these after I lost the spot I was storing my online magazines. Have the archives been trimmed so only the 4E articles are online, or am I missing them?

    Disappointment in thinning Dragon content

I can understand it, especially with the large crowd that considers everything in character builder "allowable." Also, it allows them to experiment with options that would not fit well in the character builder (or would require development time beyond the scope of the article).

    Disappointment in thinning Dragon content

I believe those people are much the same demographic as ENWorld. However, what they were asking for were more articles every day. WotC decided they could only do that with shorter articles, so shorter articles were born. Now they are back down to fewer articles, and they are the shorter...

    Eberron Adventures

Yes, they shut down a few months ago. A shame because I had moved a few of my WotC board threads there that were resource oriented (a list of D&D miniatures for Eyes of the Lich Queen, and I believe a complete list of the print Eberron adventures).

    Long Combats are Bad

I have been thinking this same thing lately. 4E combats are interesting, detailed and everything I want in an interesting combat. However, often I just want a quick and dirty combat. I really want a combat where you can scale the amount of detail. The only RPG I have seen that does this is...

Do You Write In Or Modify Your Game Manuals?

I recently pulled out my AD&D DMG and noted that I had penciled in the errata. I also added the xp section in pencil to my AD&D MM.

    Hit Points... Up or Down?

In D&D I add up. However, when I play different RPGs, sometimes I subtract. it depends on how the RPG handles damage (for example, if "hit points" are low enough to have boxes to check off, etc.)

Which D&D Campaign World did you enjoy most?

Eberron wins it hands down for me. The post WWI feel of the campaign is great and I love how that ties into the heroic and noir pulp vibe as well. No other D&D setting comes close (for non-D&D FRP settings, Glorantha has dropped to a close number 2). Second favorite would be Birthright. I...

Dark Sun DnD Game Day Adventure Review

What slightly surprised me was the editing. My Eladrin Monk had a +9 perception, yet a 19 passive Insight and a 14 Passive Perception. The flavor text for the tembo describes his green eyes and then two lines later describes his red eyes (or visa versa). We had a good time, and I suspect...

    Birthright??

I am not going to comment about specifics for the system (as I said, I never got around to playing in Birthright), but I would consider this a plus. I like a campaign where the characters begin as youths and don't become powerful until they are quite old. Of course, I admire the Pendragon...

    Birthright??

I am aware of that project, but it didn't really click for me.
