The artist for the gem dragons was the late Glen Angus, who IMO was spectacular in depicting the gods in Deities and Demigods. He might have gone for the roughly cut gemstone look for the amethyst and crystal dragon scales which did not appeal to everyone, so I get what you're saying. I wonder...
