Jim, where are you getting the 150 from? I thought you just said 1st level monsters were 100XP?

P'cat, I am thinking that it will flow nicely. Thanks. Herschel, good tips, especially about the grind. :) I am reading the skill challenge section in the DMG booklet of the intro set. Seems a little weird but I understand it. Another thing I am stumbling on... "determine your XP budget."...

I was kind of leaning towards that in my mind. Like when the Fellowship gets out of Moria and rests and weeps on the rocks. That begins a "short rest" in game terms.

Just to update everyone there is an issue with my WPN/DCI number that WotC is trying to resolve. Sadly, I won't be running tonight's encounter, :( but I should be go for next week. B-) Thanks for all the advice, folks. I was watching the D&D Robot Chicken videos. One thing came up that made...

Awwww. I got it now. A sweep is not a "sweep" per se. That is just a flavor name and fluff for the maneuver. What matters is the end result which is a game condition. Lost Soul, that's the link. Thanks. Jim, that is the exact sheet. Were you the one that posted about using it in a game?

I have to say thanks to everyone so far. All the advice is helpful. Filthgrinder, thanks for the support. I was hoping since it would only be an encounter of about an hour or so that it would be a good way to jump into 4e and try it out. :) The conditions are something I am keeping an eye on...

This is something I will certainly keep an eye out for. Traditionally, I loved to DM outside the box. Some of my best adventures were not prepared at all except for maybe a random chart roll or two. I would love for PCs to swing from chandeliers into the chest of an ogre, throw sand in a foe's...

I might have to check this thread out. EDIT: I actually started reading this on Saturday but will take a closer look at it today.

Hum, so the way the Page 42 reference comes together sounds a lot like in Tunnels & Trolls where the GM uses his judgment to decide on a Saving Roll target number dependent on the difficulty and other factors based upon the situation. Well, that certainly is a good thing and if I think of that...

Before I thank everyone again for the newest advice, I want say I have seen lot of reference to page 42 of the DMG as something that is very important, (not just in this thread). I am not getting why. Most of the stuff on the page I am already pretty good at but the table seems a little cryptic...

The do something cool card. That sounds... cool. I looked at the Obsidian Skill thing. Looks good but I want to wrap my head around the standard rules first. Although, I am all about improv and was thinking if the player describes the action the want to take in vivid detail, giving then the +2...

Excellent advice everyone! Hello again, diaglo! P'Cat... make the DCs easier??? Humm, the Hackmaster GM inside me wants to pretend he never saw you write that. ;) Although that does remind me to check the errata. Oh, and the character builder is probably the only reason why I gave 4e more...

    Crash Course in 4th ed.

Well, let me put something to bed. I have no idea how anyone saw anything negative in my original post. I was just saying that I am very familiar with older editions and very comfortable with those. While I will admit there are some things that don't appeal to me about the presentation of 4e...

To make a long story short, I might be running D&D Encounters at the FLGS. Those of you that know me know I am a staunch AD&D / OD&D guy with lots of experience in those game. Needless to say, I have not DM'ed (or really played of that matter) 4e. So... I have skimmed through the rule books and...

    Basic 4e style. Thoughts?

Neat idea. I am just not that familiar with 4e yet to comment on such a rule in detail. If it makes it more simple, I would be all for it. :)

    Basic 4e style. Thoughts?

So, a question I now have is if I am going to have the racial classes, and most others are going to be human, should I do this as written: Level 1: 2 feats; 3 at-will powers; 1 encounter power; 1 daily attack power; 1 one extra trained class skill, +1 to all defenses but AC, +2 to one ability...

    Basic 4e style. Thoughts?

YES! I was looking at the feats and powers and I think I can almost remove the ones that tie into squares. This would help a newbie and possibly allow for mini-less play. I am still trying to soak in the whoule healing surge and HP stuff. I agree with the classics but why remove Action...

    Basic 4e style. Thoughts?

Whoop-assery! I love that term and that is exactly what I am trying to avoid. I haven't even looked at the warlock (or warlord for that matter) but the good thing is if I were to make a "race as class" class, I could pick and choose pieces from all the races and classes to try to make it as...

Virgil, great post. I always like hearing how families' play sessions go. Anything new yet?

I just played my first Rules Cyclopedia based game

Actually if you re using the AD&D 1st ed. MM, you can use the AC as is. There is no AC 10 in the book. It was written during a transition period from OD&D to AD&D and still retains the OD&D armor class scores, (which translate later into Classic D&D.)
