So the playtest is out: What do you think? The EN World poll!

It looks very promising, but haven't got round to playing it yet.

    2012 PC Bodycount thread

Melissa Moonmaiden R.I.P. My character, our party's healer (favoured soul 6) died in an encounter last wednesday. A Chuul paralyzed her and dropped her in the water. The party killed the Chuul, but couldn't get her safe and she was mauled to death by 2 other Chuuls who just joined the fray...

What will eventually be the classic adventures!

Most fun I had was with Tomb of Horrors (3.5 version) and Expedition to Castle Ravenloft. But they weren't really originals, rather remakes of earlier versions. Night Below was pretty epic, but was still AD&D... I guess Red Hand of Doom would fit the bill best from what I heard, but I never...

    Running a Derro Encounter

all of the above and more... They are actually teleported to and trapped there on the island by a Mind Flayer Sorcerer (End Boss) and left to wander. (In Forgotten Realms Derro are creations by the Mind Flayers) What does a Derro do when he's left to wander? kill randomly I'd say! There...

DMs: How Do You Clue Players In That...

Sometimes it's obvious, e.g. when a Mountain Troll walks by and the party is only level 3, they should not attack, but hide or run. Other times, when they don't get the hint, I let the monster deal massive damage to a PC (but not one shot killing him/her). Often that gets the message across...

    Running a Derro Encounter

This sounds about right, and I'm not necessarily lookingfor a live or die encounter. They just barely survived/escaped one, killing off a Chuul, but being mangled by 2 others (one major NPC died and 2 PC's were at negative hitpoints).

    latest gaming purchase ?

latest purchases for D&D, was yesterday: Coffee, Beer, cake, crisps. going back a long way for an actual gaming accessory purchase, I think it was the D&D Minis Beholder Collector set from 2010: Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game Official Home Page - Product (Beholder Collector's Set)

D&D 5E How are people currently feeling about 5e?

Cutiously optimisitc, but Monte Leaving again doesn't offer me much hope. Will probably give 5th edition a chance, never even bothered with 4th. Also skeptical about the playtest even being available to us European players.

    Running a Derro Encounter

LoL, there will be an ambush or not depending on what the players do. Situation sketch (what I expect to happen anyway): The players will arrive on a small island after having escaped by rowboat from a tough combat encounter on a previous island. They're probably low on spells and...

    Running a Derro Encounter

Got an encounter with a group of Derro upcoming. Derro :: d20srd.org Kind of iffy how to play the insanity card. Thinking about incorporating some of the insanity efects from the tables in the link below: Sanity :: d20srd.org It'll be 6-12 Derro in an openplanned area vs a party of 5...

Hit Points - Why were they designed to be incoherent?

Don't see any argument to rename them. "Hit Points" vs "Toughness points"? We all know you are in trouble when the amount of hits you can take is running low, sounds similar to me. The term "Hit point" is also D&D staple, changing it would only sow confusion. And gamers would keep calling...

    Are you a preparation junky?

Guilty as charged. I'm pretty good at improvising, but I am a prepare-aholic.

    XP as dated?

I give xp for encounters overcome, not necessarily through combat, as well as bonus xp for good roleplaying. However, I still like to use xp.

    When you're preparing a session...

...do you also always get on edge and have the feeling that you're forgetting something? I'm GM-ing tomorrow for the first time in a year and a half, and I'm getting quite nervous. I don't exactly know why. The weird thing is, I allways feel like this when I get to GM. I reread the entire...

    XP as dated?

We've got a group of players who sadly are not always present at every session. I like to use xp in this instance for multiple aspects of the same reason: * To promote an as-high-as-possible turnout for the game * To reward those who do make it to every session xp is really the best carrot...
