How to get better at describing actions, not rolls

If you said exactly that, I think that's enough information to ascertain your goal and approach. I can easily adjudicate that as requiring a Persuasion check, with success making the party-goers friendly towards you. You might not even have to roll if your character was a noble or famous...

D&D 5E Stealth Checks - How do you handle them?

I think this illustrates the main difference between our approaches. I only ask for checks once someone has committed to a course of action, then that roll determines the outcome. A PC cannot say, "I'm going to sneak across the courtyard, using the pillars for cover so the guard doesn't see me."...

D&D 5E Stealth Checks - How do you handle them?

I would assume that training in stealth would include knowing when you've been spotted. Does a PC trained in Survival have no idea when he becomes lost? Surely they'd be the first to know. The only way I can imagine this playing out is if the PC had some kind of Flaw related to overconfidence...

    D&D 5E Tarot / Tarokka Character Generation

This is really cool. I'm going to suggest this method to my next group of players and will definitely give it a go myself for kicks. I'll use the Tarokka deck, there's a list of meanings in the Curse of Strahd book.

D&D 5E Proposed Magic Items - Long Sword of Balance and Ring of Nimbleness, comments welcome

They look good to me. Nothing super powerful, but definitely useful. Not sure what this addition is supposed to mean though. It might be better to say something conclusive like "...advantage on Acrobatics checks while touching the sword."

D&D 5E New Feat: Hold the Line

It should be Extra Attack, as only monsters and wild-shaped druids have access to Multiattack. That said, I like this version. Protects action economy and bounded accuracy but makes your OA nasty while giving a buff to Protection style. My only gripe would be that it requires you to be 5th...

    D&D 5E Interrupting a Long Rest

It's relevant because I was pointing out that iserith's approach doesn't remove tension from the game by allowing the rest to complete.

    D&D 5E Interrupting a Long Rest

Each PC (four of us) briefly describes what we're doing to help set up camp. It can be as short as, "I set up the tents and get the fire going." or, "I make sure our camp site is tucked away and protected from the elements." Then we make a group Survival check, if two or more of us pass the...

    D&D 5E Interrupting a Long Rest

As a player in one of Iserith's games, we absolutely want to secure camp. Failure to do so means we may have to face one more potentially deadly encounter using our already depleted resources. That's where the tension lies, not in whether we have to tack on an extra hour of rest at the end.

D&D 5E Encounters per day and session time

I'll just add that I can't remember a session where we took the two short rests. The time pressure, and our tendency to bring a few healing potions, means we tend to push ourselves pretty far before deciding to rest. Plenty of sessions end with us taking our first rest of the session after the...

    D&D 5E Ridiculous Sprinting Build

Dash is an interesting point. It doesn't effect your speed at all, it gives you extra movement for the turn equal to your speed. So each use of the dash adds your speed to the movement total. If a rogue uses Dash-Action and Dash-Bonus-Action that is a triple speed move, not quadruple. However...

D&D 5E Way of the Temporal Hand (Monk Archetype) [Peach]

I like the direction you've gone in with this subclass. A few points of feedback: "Proficiency bonus of your Monk level" is a new and strange mechanic and I'd probably replace that with Wis Mod instead. For Temporal Shift, I'd add a Ki cost like Lanliss suggested. Maybe reword it like this:

I will! Brand new player too. I think it's safe to say that he's hooked.

D&D 5E The non barbarian barbarian

I have a player in my game who is playing a non-barbaric Barbarian character, using the totem path. He's one of the last surviving members of a mercenary company, haunted by the comrades who died in a terrible battle. He gains toughness from the spirit of his bearlike commander, and superior...

D&D 5E Character stat generation idea

You could also roll them one at a time. Choose a stat, then roll a die and add it. Do this until you've used up all your dice. This way, you can hit that 18 if you really want. But if you land on a 17 you'd probably take it, over wasting another die for that +1. Sixes are still great, ones are...

D&D 5E Your favorite campaign you've never run

Dungeons & Dragons Breakfast Club. The PCs are the underachieving students at the ol' Adventurer Academy. Early levels would see them being relegated to the mundane jobs while the straight-A adventurers get all the glory.
