D&D 5E Racial Ability Score Mods

I'm thinking about importing Pathfinder's racial ability score mods into my campaign, because they better match my ideas of racial strengths/weaknesses. But can someone point me toward a link or quote from Mearls about the reason for not having negative racial ability score modifiers in 5E? I'm...

    D&D 5E Loss of genericity

I disagree. I think a worldly, book-less spellcaster who was born with magic in their blood is distinguishable enough without being too specific about the source of that power. An yes, the story of them in the world does have to be distinguishable. But I'd like it to be my story. And I'd like...

    D&D 5E Loss of genericity

That's not the problem I'm describing. The sorcerer was an example of a larger observation about 5E.

    That's pretty good. Cheers.

    D&D 5E Loss of genericity

But most of the Greyhawk specific stuff in 3E was just names and fluff, not mechanics that are hardwired into classes, etc. That stuff is much easier to change. To be honest, I haven't given the DMG a thorough read-through. Although I am aware that it has alternate rules and suggestions for...

    D&D 5E Loss of genericity

But they're not options. Like with the sorcerer, you have to choose one. You can't just have a sorcerer without a draconic or wild origin. Same with the bard schools, druid circles, etc. It's all built into the class.

    D&D 5E Loss of genericity

You're right, of course. D&D does have it's own distinct flavour. It just seems like it's been more concentrated in this particular edition, that's all.

    D&D 5E Loss of genericity

Hi folks. I've been going through some old notes from D&D campaign worlds I created years ago when I was playing more regularly, and thinking about using one of them for my first 5th edition campaign. One thing that struck me when looking at the twists and variants on regular races/classes I...

    Robber Fly miniature?

Hi folks. Just wondering if anyone knows of a good miniature for a Robber Fly? It's an old D&D monster, and is basically just a giant fly with a hatred of low-level adventurers and giant bees. As far as I know there was no official model made. But there don't seem to be many generic giant fly...

D&D 5E Sell me on Wizards

Out of interest, are you finding that half-orc wizards work pretty well in 5th ed? I had one in 3rd edition which I became quite fond of and would love to give him a new incarnation in 5th ed. Any tips for making this combination work well would be much appreciated! Cheers.

    D&D 5E Auzzie Gamers Question.

Just got notification from Milsims that my Player's Handbook has shipped!

    D&D 5E Auzzie Gamers Question.

I ordered mine through Milsims, and they got the Starter Set to me a day or two after the official release date, so I remain confident they'll come through again. On a slight tangent, I must say, it's nice to see so many Aussie D&D players responding to this thread. Good to know the hobby is...

D&D 5E Starter Set from Amazon arrived

I considered ordering through Amazon, but decided on supporting a local (Australian) business and preordered through Milsims Games. Last update I got indicated that they wouldn't receive the stock until around the official release date, then it could be posted out to customers. Still refreshing...

    D&D 5E Half-Orcs

Hi folks. Can anyone tell me what we know of half-orcs in 5th edition? I wasn't a part of the playtesting, so have no idea what kind of design path they're following for them. And do we know if they're in the PHB? Back when I was playing D&D regularly (3rd edition), one of the first characters...

D&D 5E Starter Set adventure duration

Hi folks. Just wondering if anyone who has the Starter Set and has played through the adventure knows how long it takes to finish it (approximately, of course)? It's been ages since I played D&D, so I can't really remember how long it took to get through an adventure. Though I have a feeling it...

D&D 5E Using new characters in Starter Box adventure?

Thanks! I think we'll stick to the pre-gens for the starter box adventure. We haven't played D&D in many years, so it will be a good introduction back into the game. Cheers.

D&D 5E Using new characters in Starter Box adventure?

Hi folks. I have the D&D Starter Set on order, and have read through the Basic rules PDF, and I'm just wondering if it will mess with the adventure in the Starter Set if we use new characters generated using the Basic rules, rather than using the characters included? Just thought the adventure...
