Continuing the monthly excerpts leading up to release: I've posted the third excerpt, for anyone who might be interested in seeing if the novel is likely to be something they'd enjoy. If you read it, I hope you dig. Paul

An Excerpt from my forthcoming novel

Zaukrie: I'm very glad to hear that. My sincere thanks. I think the Twilight War represents the best of the Erevis Cale stories published so far (though I think the forthcoming GODBORN, is better still). Krug: Thanks, man! It does feel a long way off. But I've got a newborn baby and...

Oh, I take no offense at all. :-) The Hammer and the Blade will be distributed by Random House for Angry Robot, so it'll be in available in print format in essentially all bookstores (it will also be available for download in the various ebook formats). Release date is June 26 of next year.

An Excerpt from my forthcoming novel

I've actually written over a dozen novels and many, many short stories. My work up to now has been in the Forgotten Realms (the Erevis Cale novels for Wizards of the Coast) and in the Star Wars galaxy (for Del Rey and Lucasfilm). My bibliography is here. THE HAMMER AND THE BLADE will be my...

    D&D Novels

Joe, WotC made Twilight Falling available as a free pdf at my request (and man was it like pulling teeth), but that was before they entered the ebook market (which they did in March/April this year). At that point, they took the free version down (for obvious reasons). I'm also happy to...

Have you ever been to Walt Disney World?

I took my family there last year and this is the dark, bloody tale of the events that transpired there: Into the Tomb of Disney.

Paul S. Kemp's defense of shared world fiction

@Hobo Somewhat of a tangent: I've read (or tried to read) one of the Warhammer titles you favorably mentioned above. I found it unbearable: the prose turgid, the characters cliched, and even the point-of-view choices distracting and occasionally muddled. It was a real struggle for me to get...

Paul S. Kemp's defense of shared world fiction

The point is that most writers, both tie-in and otherwise, don't make a living from their writing. Given that, the logic (such as it is) of your position implies that essentially ALL writing should come off as if written by amateurs. Is that your position, or did you just pop in the thread to...

Paul S. Kemp's defense of shared world fiction

And remember -- very few professional writers actually make a living at it (the numbers I usually hear are some fraction of one percent of writers support themselves with the money from writing). Money isn't a big driver for most. Instead, they write because they're creative people who love to...

Paul S. Kemp's defense of shared world fiction

All professional writers (or would-be professional writers) write with the expectation of material gain. Otherwise, we'd all just post our novels on the internet for free. The expectation of material gain and engaging in a labor of love are not mutually exclusive propositions. It's true that...

Paul S. Kemp's defense of shared world fiction

Well, when you wrote "it's not a labor of love," it seemed to me reasonable to conclude that you meant to suggest that the author, you know, didn't love his labor. I haven't seen that to be the case. Now that you've clarified, the issue you're raising seems to be one of deadline pressure...

Paul S. Kemp's defense of shared world fiction

*smoke and brimstone. Kemp materializes.* WHO HAS SUMMONED ME!? Oh, it's you. Well, I guess that's okay, then. :) I'm not sure what I can add. I stand by the position that generalizing about the quality of tie-in fiction is misplaced. It's difficult to change folks minds about this...

    Role of the Dianoem

Can someone give me a brief description of the role the Dianoem plays (and/or its actual history/purpose) in adventures three and four. My group is just wrapping up Scouring and is on the road to the Fire Forest. En route, they'll meet Marben Diamondheart and his fellow dwarves. Since the...

    Suggest some books

Based on what you've listed here, I think Raymond E. Feist's Riftwar series would be something you'd enjoy. If you wanted to go old school, I suspect you'd also enjoy Leiber's Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser stories, and probably Moorcock's Elric series, too.

Has anyone else started playing 'Scouring' yet? (Possible Spoilers)

Well, I had only four PCs last night and they moved through the opponents pretty easily. I included the flaming oil (though it did damage only in the first round because I figured the oil only leaked through the slats that one time, then burned debris on the floor at the Xs) and the falling...
