D&D Novels

Oh well. Make sure you read the Rose Estes Hate Page (by Greyhawk guru Erik Mona himself iirc) that Hobo linked to before buying any of her books.

Wow! Just read through the "hate page", and while I don't really like the idea of a "hate page" on anything . . . . I'm going to have to re-read those books! I enjoyed them as a kid, but didn't remember any of that terrible prose or the wierd-ass things that happen to the protagonist.

I also kept referring to the books upthread as the "Tiger Nomad" series, but "Wolf Nomad" is more accurate . . . . where did my memory substitute "tiger" for "wolf"?

Ah well, definitely not the place to start for someone relatively new to D&D fiction!

Excellent riposte to Mark there.

Piffle. He got irked when his threadcrap about not reading D&D books at all didn't get the response he wanted so he found a link to some of the worst of the genre and tried to send people there as if it was representative of all D&D books (and he got called on it by Alzrius).

I wouldn't put Norton and Estes in the same category, either. Norton wrote (obviously) for young adults and was trailblazing a genre. Estes seems to have been hired to churn out volumes of material with not much editorial control.

Mark, Hobo has explained himself and the conversation is staying polite. Please don't try to make something that isn't there.

Y'know, it'd be great if you'd quit trying to ascribe malicious motives to me for no reason whatsoever, kthxbye. And I included that link in my supposed "threadcrap" post, so your interpretation makes no sense whatsoever anyway.

Or are you calling my "threadcrap" post the one where I recommended a bunch of books? That doesn't make sense either. I guess the whole thing doesn't make sense, because you're making up some bizarre story of what happened in this thread so far that doesn't match my experience at all.

It's over. Enough. - PCat

I love it when the moderator tells one guy to pull back and then the other guy responds. Yes! Keep it on topic dudes.

Has anyone noticed that WoTC pulled down Twilight Falling? It was in PDF format and was the first in the first series by Paul Kemp. I've heard there have been issues between WoTC and Paul but haven't done more research due to laziness.

In terms of books though, the anthologies, as others have mentioned, tend to have a huge benefit in that if you don't like the author, you can move on to another author.

I will be very curious to see how Paizo's own fiction line does, especially as at least one of the former WoTC authors is making a novel in that setting (Elaine Cunningham I believe.) It would be another truimpth for Paizo to poach former employees with a solid track record and as it gets more good work out there, I'm all for it.

Joe, WotC made Twilight Falling available as a free pdf at my request (and man was it like pulling teeth), but that was before they entered the ebook market (which they did in March/April this year). At that point, they took the free version down (for obvious reasons).

I'm also happy to report that the issues between WotC and me are resolved and I'm contracted to write a follow up trilogy to The Twilight War.

(As an FYI, I'm also under contract with Paizo to write a novel in the Pathfinder line and I'm very excited about it. Great setting. And of course I'm still writing Star Wars novels for Del Rey.)

Speaking of which, the Dave Gross Paizo novel is due out any time now. If it's anything like the shorter fiction starring those same two characters, it's going to be about the best RPG fiction ever written. I'll buy that, and Kemp's upcoming Old Republic themed novel, sight unseen.

shoudl be some exciting times with so much talent out there.

Old Republic! Oooooh . . .

I've drifted away from Star Wars fiction, but I'm excited for the upcoming MMO and if Kemp is writing it . . . . I'll be at least one guaranteed purchase!
